I think the Public School system is a hugely different place now than it was 30 years ago (when I was there) and not for the better.

My HS teacher friends tell me that:

1. They must have a 75 class median (After hearing this, I pulled out my old report cards (yes, I still have them) and the class medians were usually in the low 60's)

2. They are under pressure to pass every student (that was NEVER the case)

3. 40 to 50 percent of the Grade 12 graduates have an 80 average (in my day it was about 15 percent or so)

4. They get a lot of grief from students harassing them for high marks when the students can't put a sentence together

5. They get phone calls from parents pressuring them regarding little Johnnies assignment marks

None of this shit happened back when I was in High School.

The virtual reality school systems

I'm so very glad my children are done with the public school system. What an embarrasment.I assume all these idiots who do not pass in their assignments in this school system will get their pay in the real world based on"potential"?Just pathetic

Just confirms the fact that the current education players have no idea what the real world is.

I don't understand... why can he be fired for that? They wont allow that kind of nonsense in post 2ndary education, so why let them think they can get away with it in high school?

everyone is equal and no one is a loser. that is the policy for the generation coming up. if life is to hard the person that made it hard will be taken out of your way for you. struggling and trying are things of the past now. the future wants everything handed to them.

Just wait till the get to the real world!!! I am sure they will be even worse than the 20-30 somethings now!!

and look at the big deal about bullying... bullying makes most kids stronger. Sure there will be some casualties along the way.. but the strong will thrive. It is survival of the fittest
not anymore.

as for the rest the world is coming up with a buncha kids who been coddled and they will coddle the next generation. no accountability, no more offensive words, no more saying things that people may not want to hear. the world is gonna be a very bleak vanilla place very soon.

people like me that say what they want when they want and as bluntly as they want will be shunned. the world of free speech is going to vanish for the world of everyone is equal.

I normally don't side with teachers but they have a real shitty job these days. They can't be a disciplinarian. They can't confiscate cell phones and pda's unless its during a test or exam. They aren't allowed to fail a student. They have to deal with special needs and ESL students with little help. They put up with tons of bullshit from administrators, parents, students. Their principals don't go to bat for them and in fact in many cases are quite hostile. Yes they make good salaries, enjoy benefits such as vacation, sick days (which they used to be able to bank), a great pension etc. but I would hesitate strongly before becoming a new teacher today.

I remember class medians being around 67 when I was in high school. But in my graduating class there probably were only about 10% who were Ontario Scholars (>80% in 6 OAC's). There were a handful who had a greater than 90% average. Nowadays kids are getting in the 90's regularly. Two reasons. 1) dumbed down curriculum thanks to McGuinty. 2) easier marking and potential for bonus marks.

Absolutley correct.

My teacher friend said exactly the same thing.

A 90 when you went to High School back in the 70's and 80's was a real achievement. Now it's about the same as what a 75 was back in the day. I know I'm sounding like an old coot, however, I'm afraid it's the truth.

Do you actually expect today’s teachers to accomplish anything other than plan their next day, week or month off.

The biggest problem with teachers today is,...they feel that they don't actually work for anybody,...NOBODY tells them what to do,..they are an entity unto themselves.

That is why,...even if they agreed 100% with a contract,...it would have to appear that they had the final say,..."we are going to give you a 50% raise,...and that’s are final offer",...they would go on strike !!!

If you remember McGuinty proudly announced when he took over as the "Education Premier" that under his leadership all students would become above average. That supposedly meant that all students were going to get better grades under his leadership than they had gotten under previous governments of all three stripes. Unfortunately not everyone is born with the equipment to make it into the genius category (and this has proven to be true by McGuinty himself) so the marks had to be raised artificially. The pressure was on to get the marks up. I have been told that as the marks have gone up under McGuinty the actual level of intelligence of our student body has gone down. The median has gone up 10 percentage points over the last 5 to 7 years under direct pressure from the Ministry through the Boards to the Principals and on down to the Teachers. Unfortunately, despite the grand McGuinty plan to have everyone be above average that has dumbed down our education system, today 50% of the students are still above average while the other 50% are below. Same ratio as when McGuinty conceived his grand plan for destroying education in Ontario.

I saw retired teachers hobbying like crazy in Cuba. Their pensions seem to be worth whatever they endure while working.

I love how the issue of an idiotic policy set at the government level becomes a tirade against teachers.

Did he really pull a Lake Wobegon. Surprised it didn't make a bigger splash.
