I got some art work done today and now I am noticing that the ink seems to be seeping out of my skin a bit and causing the letters to be a bit smudged. The scab has not formed yet. Is this normal? I am hoping the smudging will not be permanant. Any advice or comments would be welcome.

Cheers

MAKE SURE YOU DON'T PICK THE SCAB!

I made that mistake by picking a little bit off the wing of my butterfly, and the detail was ruined once it healed. Thank God for touch ups.

Also, make sure you don't soak in the tub, and wash it daily with mild pure soap such as Ivory or anything that is antibacterial

Bacitracin Zinc Ointment USP is the best ointment to use on tats and piercings

Actually I got the existing one on my shoulder (Canadian Flag) re-done as it was looking pretty crappy and I had some work added to it to make it larger. It has been so many years since I had my first, I have forgotten how to look after them.

your tattoo after it has been finished should be sealed with seran wrap for 24 hours (obviously the ointment given to you should have been applied. After the 24 hours you are to take of the wrap and let it breath. Apply the ointment and avoid any clothing that may cause the scab to be pulled off. If any ink did not hold, you go back for a touch up and repeat above. (touch ups are free)

Every time that i have gotten a tattoo (8) they have always been really strict with removing the bandage in 3-4 hours. was just wondering if the seran wrap did something different?

yah it sure did. My tattoo on my arm which is exposed to sun a lot has not faded and looks like I just got it done and it's almost 6 years old. See the problem that I see a lot is that they cover the tattoo with a goze bandage which is not good. That is why they ask you to take it off after 3-4 hours. The seran wrap lets your tattoo stay moist which I find helps the tattoo to allow the ink to take to the skin rather then it being a huge scab after 5 hours. I find that having the tattoo dry out too quickly sets the ink more in the scab then in the area you had tattooed.....I have 5.

Be careful with vitamin E wherever you put it; it can cause a reaction, even if you've used it previously without problems. I had been putting some around my eyes for a few weeks when out of the blue they suddenly started swelling until I looked like a bee had stung both my eyes. Not so fun.

A tattoo, if cared for properly during healing should NEVER scab. A + D ointment should be put on it constantly for the first few days. Then you can move on to lotion which also has to be put on regularly. I used Curel on my last one and it healed the best out of all 3 of mine. Just don't ever let it get dry until it is healed all the way. DON"T use vitamin E or neosporin, although there are some uneducated artists out there who will tell you to do that.

Actually instead of Saran wrap, there is a moisture retention gauze called Mepilex border that can be used. Just be careful about unwrapping a new tattoo too early - you can get ink transfer on clothes and sheets etc...

As well, the vitamin A / D is better than the Vitamin E choice and never use poly or neosporin on a tattoo.

I've had several tattoos done in the past 15 years or so and I've never had one scab over.
