Okay.... we've established that there are some really sad examples of acting and singing talent out there today.the Britany spears , Ashlee simpsons, and Hillary duff's are perfect cannon fodder..HOWEVER...my question is.....does anyone think that, in the past , there are stars who were incredibly overrated?
Liza minelli for me comes to mind.......were there alot of roles for psychotic drunks?....i've seen planet of the apes once....and i though charleton(not spelled right) hestons acting was completely laughable by todays standards.actually take a look at many of the TV shows from the 70's and early 80's....the acting was horrible.

This is a difficult question because what is defined as 'talent' varies from person to person. I will watch some old music videos from the early '80's and be horrified because it looks so laughable (though new technology has to carry some blame for those videos). However when growing up in the 80's, we all laughed at the '70's and how hidious the pop styles/culture/music was.

One thing I will say is this: There has been a huge shift in what record companies what out of artists. They used to find and want these super-bands. Now they have realized that those "super-bands" are not to their advantage since they demand such a big cut of the pie. They figured out that it is more profitable to find those "one-hit-wonders". And if you can't find 'em.... make them yourself.

Personally I find Brittney, Christina, etc... entertaining. They are nice to look at, nice dance moves (yes that is talent right there), good stage presence (talent again), and their songs very catchy (even if the vocals are enhanced in the studio). As long as I am entertained by it and find enjoyment out of it, I don't care if they don't write their own songs or can sing it perfectly.

Ed Sullivan - how does a guy like this get his own show?

Adam West - unless you think "camp" = talent

Debbie Boone - they don't call them "one hit wonders" for nothing

Tiny Tim - ummmmmm... moving on

My point is that in the past, more effort was made to find what can be called 'talent'. Now, big companies don't want to waste time looking for it. With the right kind of marketing and technological aids and enhancements, they can now make their own talents - their own talents merely being defined as an entertainer's ability to generate a lot of money and publicity. That is the only criteria that counts not anything enlightening or enriching or trendsetting. I do agree that it is enjoyable looking at (but not listening or paying to listen to) Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez to name a few. I mean, you do have to have some sort of physical appeal. I wouldn't kick either one of them out of bed. As a matter of fact, I would consider a chance to make love to either one of them (or maybe even both at the same time!) a real privilege.

Who says you need talent to be famous in America? All you need is to be good looking or related to somebody famous already.

Examples:

Most young singers today or most boy bands that have ever come onto the scene.
Ben Affleck
Lorenzo Lamas (needed a 80's reference that is still hanging around)
Ashton Kucher
Tara Reid
The Cast from "VIP" and "Baywatch"

Fourtunately there is some potential out there as well that could break away from the stereotype:

Mandy Moore
Natalie Portman
Anna Paquin

I have not seen Cabaret in a long, long time... but I remember thinking it was pretty great at the time (Liza included). As for Heston, the Omega Man rules!

I think the most overrated person of the last 30 years is Steven Spielberg.

On the talented side you forgot Ed Norton, and Gary Oldman who are, in my mind, a couple of the most talented actors today. You may also want to throw in Rachel McAdams who seems to have a ton of potential

Agreed....Edward Norton and Gary Oldman are great. I'd call them already established though vs. potential (i.e. younger and still growing in the art).

Haven't actual seen a Rachel McAdams film yet so she didn't come to mind.
