Canadian ISP blocking iTunes store/podcasts?
A reader writes, "A very short thread on Apple's website notes that Rogers/Shaw ISPs in Canada are blocking podcast downloads because of a policy against multiple downloads."

Over the past month Rogers (ISP) in Canada has put some software on their networks that prevents activity for BitTorrents, P2P, IRC, and also along with that is a rule that if you are trying to download a large media file from more then 1 server it will be dropped. When you download a Podcast from iTunes it downloads that file from multiple servers in the background (I confirmed this by watching my cable modem logs). As soon as it tries to use more than 2 different servers for the download, it just stops. That's the reason why Podcast downloads stop at random places - it's the point where a 2nd server is involved in the download. The same issue causes timeouts and cut-offs in the iTunes music store.

Here is the problem - when anyone calls Rogers about the problem they say it is either a router, firewall or Apple problem and they shrug you off.

Hundreds or thousands of people in Canada can no longer get Podcasts or purchase music from the iTunes Music store. This is BAD. Please, Apple, contact Rogers and sort it out. So many people have called Rogers with no luck.

I was wondering of those who have rogers iternet if they have been having any trouble with bit torrent over the past month. Word is is that rogers is doing new filtering to stop people from using the popular service.

the problem is not solved because it means our freedom to download "legal" products is being hindered by our ISP. Fuck Rogers those bastards. No wonder my Ares hasn't found shit on the P2P networks. I was wondering that there can't be any way that absolutely ALL porn and software was taken off peoples computers. Fucking rogers.

a new screw the customer policy coming soon too

They (in thier infinite wisdom) have also sent me an e-mail saying that all access to usenet newsgroups will stop on Dec 15 and if I want usenet I've got to pay someone else like giganews. then they try to spin it like they are improving things as I can use these other applications

Groups

Personal web pages

Blogs

as if any of these can help like a newsgroup when I have a technical question or problem and want to throw it out to experts all over the world.
At the end of the letter they say (and I quote) "Once again, thank you for your loyalty to Rogers and your continued business." Pompous fuckers shouldn't be so sure they'll have my continued business, they don't seem to realize they don't have a monopoly on ISP's! My money just might end up in some competitors pocket.

I hate Rogers too but that is precisely what that link lets you do. It won't let you download fun things like movies though.

There's sooooo much competition in the telecommunications biz (internet, cell, tv) that the competitors are slitting each other's throats. It's strange, in some areas, they cut prices and raise service and in others they raise prices and cut service. Bell just increased their DSL basic and lite price, and reduced their HSE price but you have to take a 2 year comitment. Anybody else notice how crazy the competition has been lately?

A friend of mine was saying how she will save lots switching to Rogers so she did -she switched from bell to Rogers and she hasnt had any home phone service for 10 days -when she calls she keeps getting the recording we have a 45 minute wait all of our operators are busy -(lost lots of business)(there excuse was they are still accomodating the new services )I told her it was bullshit !so i managed to get her some free long distance for there carless service .Shes one of many that had this happen to them with no phone for weeks !I have services that outbeat every price they say is the best deal with much better service .....i actually paid lots of deneros to get out of my 3 year contract (biggest mistake )and saved that amount in two months with another service-hopefully Rogers will shape up or ship out

The moment I found out that rogers is stopping usenet service, I gave my 30 days notice.. it's a good 90% of what I use the internet for.. so now I have to pay for it and I'm switching to bell for the unlimited bandwidth.. too bad, I was quite happy with rogers internet (although I hate the company for everything else)..

Another Plane Of Existence
I'm on Bell Sympatico and I haven't heard anything from them about my constant downloading... hell, in the last week I've downloaded nearly 20 gigs of stuff... mainly podcasts, movies, tv shows, and music.

Most are legit, while the rest isn't.

But if they say anything, they really can't do anything about it cuz all I'll say is that I'm downloading for my IPod... and they can't disprove that right?

I use Sympatico Ultra (2.5 MBS) and, aside from a one week outage, I'm quite happy with it. I can download multiple torrents at once and there's no cap.

They've also dropped the price from 60 to 50 bux a month.

I didn't realize rogers was dropping the newsgroups too. I'm surprised how much they are killing their service. I want to see the company run into the ground for this  (that is if they don't fix it)

there are literally hundreds of mp3 newsgruops I can presently access. when I go to http://ca.groups.yahoo.com/ and select "Find a Group" and type in mp3, guess how many results I get? 54 and they are not anything like a newsgroup as you can't download anything:(

Rogers is full of crap now. First, they gave me the run around for 2 months when the connection speed was slow and I kept getting disconnected. Secondly, they implimented download/upload cap. And now they are gonna get rid of usenet where I do most of my downloading and I hear they are blocking Bit Torrent. What's the point of high speed internet? I could surf the net at basic speed. I'm going to Sympatico.

bittorrent

Bittorrent is working for me right now. Mind you, it's only at 50 KB/s, but that's not bad. ;) To be honest, I'm on Rogers and I haven't had any real problems with using bittorrent. Maybe I'm not getting 300KB/s with it, but it still works...
