Sweet little laptop

Just got myself a tiny new laptop (about the size of an external hard drive enclosure) and had to share the joy.

It's an ASUS EEE 4G - solid state drive (no moving parts!), with a customized Linux system. Power-on to web surfing in 30 seconds. The built-in keyboard and screen are pretty small, but with three USB2.0 ports I can attach a wireless keyboard and mouse (and hook up to an external monitor at 1024x768 - the built in screen is 800x400). And although the internal memory is only 4gig (including the OS, leaving me only a little over 1gig to play with), it's easy to plug in a thumbdrive, external memory, or to use web-based storage through the built-in wireless, or the 10/100 ethernet. (Or to plug in an SD memory card into the available slot.)

Should be a fun, ultra-portable little beast. Just had to share!

Looks cool. I knew sooner or later, someone had to come up with a kick ass pocket PC. What was the price?

How do you figure? 399.99 + 5% GST (20.00) + 8% ORST (32.00) = 451.99, same price as I quoted.

Does it have a camera, DVD drive, RJ45 jack, IEE1394, S video or VGA jacks?

A camera is an option (alternate model) for an extra $50. With no moving parts, it does not have a built-in DVD drive; however, it's easy to connect a USB drive should you need one. As stated above, it supports 10/100 Ethernet, so yes, it does have an RJ45 jack. IEEE 1394 is not included, nor is S-Video. The external monitor support mentioned above is provided by means of a DE15 ("VGA") jack.

It also includes a built-in microphone and speakers.

I called the guy at the store (Bahurst/College) he said that the $399 model is better than the $299 model. I just surf the web, like Tsn, Terb, CNN, why cant I take the cheaper one with 4 gig instead of 4 gig, would the extra gig make the laptop faster?

The 2Gig model should be perfectly capable of surfing the web. Because of the smaller internal memory, there is less software installed (and less free space remaining).

Only 1.5 hours on battery. That's a bummer.

No, beleive it or not, when 1 laptop goes down, a second one is great as the time without the broken machine takes at least 10 days to repair

Wow... I didn't even know they are available in Canada. Thanks for you post and the others who posted the retail link.

This thing is right up my alley.

Not everyone wants or needs a "full-sized" laptop.... I like the idea of this one for the size... and I like the fact that I could run XP on it

To be fair, I don't think you could run XP on this one (although some hope so, but I suspect we'd hear if anyone actually had success with it). Certainly not on the 2G version. I believe you'll have to wait for the 8G version, which has been officially announced, but isn't expected to arrive in stores for some months yet.

So how do you like it so far? Looking at getting one and doing the mods to add two internal USB connections for Bluetooth and a shiny new 32 GB USBkey. Do you find it fast enough to do what you need?

Personally I liked the Toshiba Lebretto years ago, but could never afford one. So the 4G looks like a cool toy to work with my Powerbook.
