If you have a summer vehicle that you put away and then drive a winter beater, can you share plates between them or do you need to have separate license plates?

Plates are registered to the vehicle so you need separate plates unless you want yo go to MOT and get the plates switched twice a year to the other vehicle which I don't think is allowed anyway. It's not worth the trouble.

I would guess the cost to transfer is close to the price of annual plates. Maybe the only savings would be if your birthday was in May. Renew the summer cat plates, let the winter car plates and renew them in November when you're ready to drive the winter car again. Might save six months. The MTO likely charges for a whole year even if you renew past the expiry date. The MTO only prorates if you buy a new car. I wonder if you turn your winter car plates in in May, then get new ones in November if you could save any money ? Or will you be subject to e-testing every year and safety checks even though title didn't change. Good question.

It's only $10 to transfer plates, but you may need a safety inspection and a Drive Clean at each transaction. With the cost and the hassle, it's cheaper just to get 2 sets of plates, and renew each yearly. If you own a car worth hiding for the winter, why worry about the extra $108?

Not the cost, the convenience. If just switching the plates is all then it would be easy but I agree that it sounds like a hassle and better to just get a second set of plates.
