Does anybody know if it is legal for somebody that is in Canada on a student visa to take part time work to support himself/herself?

Depends on the type of work.

My guess is if you are asking on this board then chances are.... ;)

Rules are/will be stipulated on the student visa itself under 'Remarks' or 'Conditions'. For *most* international students, work/employment is prohibited EXCEPT on campus. For example, the student works as a teaching assistant for a professor, or waits tables at the campus pub.

When I was in university the international students told me the same thing. Most of them ended up taking menial jobs during the school year like warehouse stuff and getting paid under the table.
