You may be able to work while you are studying in Canada in certain situations. You must come to Canada with enough money to live and pay your bills while you are studying.
Do not work without being authorized to do so. If you do, you may be asked to leave Canada.
Rules are/will be stipulated on the student visa itself under 'Remarks' or 'Conditions'. For *most* international students, work/employment is prohibited EXCEPT on campus. For example, the student works as a teaching assistant for a professor, or waits tables at the campus pub.

When I was in university the international students told me the same thing. Most of them ended up taking menial jobs during the school year like warehouse stuff and getting paid under the table.
