As I get older the things I used to do once with ease are getting harder now. One thing I've noticed is my arm getting tired while working with my hands over my head. Specifically I notice my bicep starting to hurt.

Before I put myself out to pasture I was wondering what excersise I could do that would strengthen my arm up for this?

Thanks.

Both biceps or just you left arm? You might want to ask your doctor before consulting the Terb "experts".

pushups are going to focus on your pecs and triceps, you want to focus on your rotator cuff muscles and specifically deltoid muscles which cap the shoulders and are responsible for helping to hold your arms above your head, sounds like they are weak. shoulder flys would be good. also stretch out your biceps.

Pull ups and rope climbing

that and or an honest days work will build the arms.

Do some landscaping, shovel a few yards of soil. Chop down a tree or two. Split some wood.

I have to agree with the assement that this is your shoulders as opposed to your arms. But the best advice I saw so far was to check with your doctor. If you have a sports medicine doctor near you it may help if you make an appointement with them.

As hunter said, check with your doctor first, but let me ask: are you doing as much menial labour as you used to? Playing sports? Lack of continuuing exercise will cause you to notice weakness when you do actually do some work.

SOme things to look forward to as you age:
1) Recovery time: your body doesn't bounce back from a hard days work like it used to.
2) Stamina: You won't be able to work as long as you used to
3) Stength: Unless you are eating properly, and working out regularly, you won't be as strong as you used to.
4) Reduced flexibility: you'll get the "old man groans" when you bend over or kneel down. My chiropractor told me what happens as we age is our tendons and ligaments tend to get shorter which decreases flexibility. Supposedly up until we're 10, we can bend backwards as far as we can forwards and that starts to diminish after that.
5) You won't be able to do doggy like a jackhammer: Don't laugh, I find that now after a hot session with an sp, my knees tend to ache for a few hours afterwards lol.

Like everything, our bodies wear out. I know of which you speak because in my line of work I'm always working relatively hard and I can't go 12 14 hrs like I used to. I'm pretty much toast by 5 pm.

Not that I'm a doc or anything but losing strenght with your arms over your head could be indicative of a circulatin problem. Your could muscles quivering could be because they are starving for oxygen and just aren't getting it. This could be due to plaque buildup in your arteries due to all those cheeseburgers you ate, high cholesteral, etc etc.

After your physical the doc will prolly say to you: dude, you're getting older! lol

As any good doctor or personal trainer would advide, always stretch before you do any physical activity.

After the body undergoes any form of exercise, protein production in the muscles is depressed, resulting in a "catabolic" state.
Simply increase your protien intake will fix this problem...

Simple exercise to strengthen arms and shoulders are "pullups" (simple and cheap)...

Cheers,
Kelsey
You sound like you know what you're talking about: isn't there some form of acid that forms in muscles too? (after exercise). I'm thinking lactic acid but that doesn't sound right......

Of course it could be something more serious and he could suffer a heart attack will doing pull-ups. Go to the doctor first.

Yes... that's it. Lactic acid.

As to answer the OP's question... Arm curls and standing rowing works great! As some have suggested pull ups are also excellent.
