This was not part of earlier discussions, but STINTZ now says the priority is a subway line to downtown!

AND

She wants tolls/taxes to pay for it!

http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/0...next-priority-project-ttc-chair-karen-stintz/

Funny how there is not enough money to build subways to the poor people in the burbs, so they get LRT TRANSIT to suffice......sometime in the next decade or two!!!

Then.....when there IS NO MONEY....the rich people get a SUBWAY DOWNTOWN...paid for by the little people in the burbs...and they need it as a PRIORITY NOW!

Is it me that's rattled???

1. The rich people don't use public transit.
2. many living downtown don't use the subway much because they live so close to work.

A significant number of people in the burbs work downtown and would be users of a downtown line. If downtown has the capacity to justify a subway then great. We need a far better transit system and if we don't pay for it, who will?

Why would anyone be rattled when a downtown relief line makes sense(Unlike one along Sheppard )????

How many times have I been passed by more than one subway at College station during rush hour bc it was too packed? When you consider the number of new condos going up in the next few years downtown, there is a real need and it will get worse very soon.

I would like to see Stintz plan

Ford was skewered for wanting subways...be it built one stop at a time if necessary..

Now let's see if Stintz gets the same skewering...or..because she now thinks like FORD....and a subway is a priority...is HER political career over for wanting subways too!

Starting to wonder if ol Ford did not orchestrate this whole thing....and he now has STINTZ wanting a subway as well...AS A PRIORITY!

It strikes me there are a number of things that seem silly in a city the size of Toronto.

-- Our subway is essentially comprised of just one line that goes east-west and two lines going north-south (and not separated by all that much distance between those two north-south lines).

-- There's no subway service to the airport.

-- As best I can tell (though I'm not familiar with the area), service out to Scarborough is pretty bad.

Never mind that on major bus routes, buses can't pick up passengers during peak periods because they are already full (similar to Jenn's comments about the College subway).

There's so much to do, it's hard to say where the definitive place is to start. More subway service in the downtown seems like one of the solutions.

Sorry bud, you sound like the mayor, his brother, whatever still passes for as his council allies(toadies) and the last remants of his dissolving, perpetually and eternally downtroddened and aggrieved nation.

Unaware of facts and reality.

Ford had no desire for a subway, any subway, any time, anywhere.

The winners will neither be ford nor Stintz.....but the commuters of Toronto.

So much better than LRT. And they want it NOW!

Ford was skewered for wanting subways...
No he wasn't. He was skewered for saying he wanted subways, but then having no plan. Stintz previously presented a plan for a subway on Sheppard and Fold told her to fuck off. So it's not the first time she's proposed subways, and you're wrong about why Ford was skewered. Many people in Toronto would be willing to pay tolls and taxes in order to fund a subway. Ford is not one of those people. He wants a free subway, one that the city doesn't have to pay for. He lives in a fantasy land.

By the way, the Downtown Relief Line was always part of the Transit City vision. The idea was to build the feeder LRT's to bring people to the subway, which is expected to max out capacity on the primary north/south line. The DRL would then be built to take the pressure off the maxed out subway line. That is in fact a sensible way to build subways--put them in to alleviate pressure on over-crowded routes. Not build subways to nowhere and then hope that maybe somebody will one day decide to use it.

No he does not want free....we have 8 billion. He is suggesting that we get er dun! NOW

EVEN ONE STOP AT A TIME......BUILD.

like the UNIVERSITY LINE....BUILD.

WE HAVE THE MONEY .....BUILD...AS IT SEEMS THEY ARE PLANNING NOW.

There is confusion all the way round. Why did Stintz only months ago propose Shepard....with cash WE HAVE....but now says DRL IS THE PRIORITY...MUST BE A SUBWAY...AND MUST BE NOW.

i like Stintz now...for thinking like this....

Poor Adam Vaughan must be spinning! Lol

He was given MANY opportunities to present a financial plan for his subway. He never did. He kept saying he would find private sponsors for it. He never did. Ford NEVER presented a subway plan.

Stintz did. She presented this:

EVEN ONE STOP AT A TIME......BUILD.
Stintz presented a plan that showed incremental stops being added to the Sheppard line. Her plan showed where the money would come from, and how it would be spent. It was funded. Ford told her to go fuck herself, so that never happened. Instead we're getting an LRT on Sheppard.

I think there are very many people who would happily have supported a FUNDED plan for subways. What people were not willing to support was continually babbling "subways subways subways" without bothering to produce a plan.

Ford is allergic to new taxes. Subways are going to require them.

It's time to put politics in the background...and get the shovels in the ground. No use discussing old political views.

Ford, Stintz, Moviefan, Torontonians..and all smart people are now on the same page.

A SUBWAY, NOW, IS THE PRIORITY!

FINALLY SANITY PREVAILS!

You do understand that they're all talking about what to do AFTER the LRT's get built, right? They view the LRT's as a done deal. When they're talking about what to do next, they are talking about, after the Sheppard and Eglinton LRT lines are complete.

On the flip side..if Stintz wwould build the DRL as a LRT..she would get it done quicker and cheaper and get more track :)

Now while it's all nice to TALK about...it was originally envisioned in 1980. Who knows when the shovel hits the ground.....but Ford, now Stintz, and majority of Torontonians wanna see a shovel in the ground..and sooner than 25 years out!!!

Is he going to say that taxes are being raised to do this? What would the voters say.

p.s. Seems like frank's stance has changed more than subtly since his first post.

David Miller, too, was a proponent of building the DRL after Transit City. I believe Adam Vaughn is also behind it.

By the way it wasn't first envisioned in 1980. The line was first proposed in 1910 and has been discussed on and off ever since then.
