I can see why Nintendo and Sony are worried about the mobile game market, the DS series of HW has absolutely ruled the space with the PSP coming in a distant (but hard core gaming) second. Now the iOS market has captured a significant % of mobile game SW sales and the quality is beginning to approach PSP/Console graphics.

Here is the latest example:

For you old guys, remember that gaming is a larger industry than the movie industry.....

Anecdotally both of my nephews and my son have asked if they can sell their DSs to free up cash to upgrade their touches or buy more iOS games....

Another interesting difference is pricing. The above game is priced as followed on these platforms:

iOS iPhone/Touch - 6.99
iOS iPad - 9.99
Wii - 29.99
XBOX - 59.99
PS3 - 59.99
Windows - 59.99

EA didn't release this game on the Nintendo DS or PSP.....

While I don't think the iOS version is as robust as the console versions (although I'm sure the graphs, as you'll see in the video, are better than the Wii version) there is a very large price advantage.

Traditional handheld gaming is getting hammered. Especially since pretty much every mobile device supports EGL and has fast CPUs with lots of RAM. Nintendo probably has the best plan by focusing on dedicated and innovative handhelds, but the success of their new mobile platforms really remains to be seen. The early period of 'convergence' in technology sucks (in pretty much any field), as it tends to be a case of doing everything poorly, but once platforms mature then it tends to drive single function devices into 'niche and professional' ghettos.

Just don't ever be an early adopter of any convergent device unless you have the money and are that turned on by it.

I would agree, as smartphones have moved from:

The market has matured.

Well 'matured' shouldn't be code for Apple, though they did get there first. :)

Oh, and a good mobile device doesn't have to be a phone. It's really funny that Sony hasn't done far better in this space. Apple locks down a lot of their devices' potential, but Sony's still building 'appliances'.

It's interesting to me how unsuccessful that PSP has been, I guess hard core gaming and moble don't mix well - if you look at the top Nintendo titles they are all fairly childish..... I'm not sure the combo Sony/Android phone will help this much.

65 million is unsuccessful? the latest version psp go didn't do well, but that relied strictly on downloaded content which limited it quite a bit
i guess compared to 145 million Nintendo DS it's unsuccessful.

the newest just announced psp2 looks pretty nice. quad core, amoled 5" screen and graphics matching the ps3

Android is about to get a huge gaming boost when sony release their entire PS1 lineup for Android phones and tablets

it's too early to count out the traditional gaming companies, as i believe the Nintendo 3DS will prove in a few weeks time
Nintendos market is huge and loyal. Wii with its weak graphics sells far more than Xbox and PS3

The graphics are pretty impressive on the iOS for this game, but you will note that it's not remotely close to the gaming experience offered by the Xbox, PS3 or PC.

for 9.99 on a iPad you get perhaps 5 hours of gameplay, nice graphics, but action is limited to only a couple things happening on screen at once compared to mayhem on the console/pc games. EA are also offering micro transaction within the game to upgrade weapons, unlock additional content or buy gaming helpers to get you through tough parts so the 6.99 and 9.99 are only base prices.

the pc version is over 17 GB and gives you about 20 hours or more of gameplay
to play it on a iPhone or iTouch with a 3.5" screen is just not particularly gratifying although it looks really nice if you have great eyes

iOS and Android phones are great for games like Angry Birds, but not for much else IMO trying to port the big titles to these phones is pretty silly as so much gets lost in the translation

I read reviews of the new NGP this morning as well. It is interesting, I think you're spot on in terms of Android - the innovation will be in the marketplace not the hardware (although to me the most innovated aspect of the above is the touch input on the back of the device).

Yes, 65M is a lot of units but when was the last time you saw someone playing a PSP? I've had mine in a drawer for over a year now.

I think Sony partnering with Google is both an admission that the market has moved to downloadable games and a move to an open platform that will allow it to sell it's games on multiple devices, both good moves.

Nintendo does have a loyal fanbase, and if they made the same move (move Mario whatever) to an open platform they'd do even better than they will do with the DS line.

My experience is (with a DS, PSP, iPhone, iPad, PS3) is that gaming on the go is completely different than at home. On the go you want small bites of action/diversion (why something simple like angry birds is so popular) not long drawn out story lines, HD cut scenes and on-line multi-player. To compare the two is I think a bit silly.

To me the price differential that is important is not the iPad to PS3 difference ($50) but that of iOS games to DS games ($5-10 vs $40).
