Starbucks denies Kensington plan

Starbucks Corp., which has 110 coffee shops listed in the Toronto phone book, uses the Vancouver office of the Grey group, a global advertising agency, to do Canadian public relations. Yesterday morning I called Vancouver to ask whether Starbucks plans a shop in Kensington Market. Phil Pick, a commercial real estate leasing agent, has approached Starbucks to rent them a vacant storefront at Nassau and Augusta avenues. He said they showed interest and are doing due diligence and demographic studies.

Read my most recent column on this here.

After my deadline yesterday, Rebecca Irani called back from Grey to say she'd heard back from Seattle, world headquarters of Starbucks. "Starbucks has not been in discussions with anyone to open a store in that area," Ms. Irani said. Hmm. Before you anti-Starbucks crusaders of Kensington break out the bubbly (or i deal's Kensington-roasted coffee), be forewarned. Earlier this year we heard Starbucks was opening at Queen and Bathurst streets. Starbucks denied it. Guess what? There's a Starbucks there now.
Call me a coffee snub... wasn't sure how well liked StarF#$ks is among Terb...yah yah..nice they fooled us into accepting its worth buying a $4 hot beverage. But i feel they f#$ked up the true Italian coffee culture. IE: southern and northern roasted coffee and the like.I don't understand why their F N espresso tastes like hazelnuts. I above all, find it insulting the way they have the pseudo Italian naming for the sizes for the beverages.
What seems to be the kicker is they somehow cannibalized themselves in the market and as of this passed July they mention 600 stores are closing

I like Starbucks over all others because they're coffee tastes like coffee. I don't get any of the fancy stuff, just a Venti (thats 20 oz. of the good stuff) bold coffee. Strong and hot. Cost is $2.26.

This speaks directly to the preciousness of Toronto. You can put a zillion Starbuck's in the city but don't you dare put it in our bastion of mothballed second hand stores and goat-eed crunchy granolas!

It just makes me laugh!!

My complaint would be they make terrible coffee. If their coffee was decent I'd say "welcome brother!"

I don't see what the fuss is about. If somebody buys a property they can open whatever store they want as long as the place is zoned for retail. There is really nothing to discuss nor is it anyone else's business.

I also have a hard time understandingthe logic behing the OPs other arguments.

Yes, I also think using the Italian names for cups is silly, but so what. Maybe they consider it standard terminology, like using Italian in musical markings.

Starbucks is a relative late arrival in the Toronto market. Franchises of Timothy's, Second Cup, Lettieri's and the now-defunct Plantation were had already introduced the concept of higher priced specialty drinks in addition to plain coffee before Starbucks' locations started to mushroom in this city.

I agree that it might not be the most successful location. With a number of places already in the market that cater to the area's typical clientele, I can't see starbucks doing so well.

Fine Hard Idle ...every one has a right to their opinion...let me elaborate...
actual names of sizes of beverage cups IE:
(English) small, medium and large
(Italian) piccolo,media and Grande...
(StarF$%ks) vienti, grande and tall...
Ya figure the names sound Italian.... Vienti is 20 in Eye Tie...Grande is Large not a medium ..they don't match...some Artsy Fartsy interpretation not correlating to Italian but i fear some Americans ignorantly get the wrong impression it is...That is my Wop sided view...
on the other hand music theory and wording isn't insulting and compliments the Eye Tie language

I just can't get over that people think Kensington is to sacred for a starbucks. They had a starbucks in the forbidden city for fucks sake (now closed) you think Kensington's a big deal?

On a side note most fucked up thing about starbucks size names IMO: the iced venti cup is 24oz.

maybe I'm old-school, but starbucks just doesn't do it for me. I suck at mixing my own and never seem to get it right.

I still love Tim Hortons. "Large double double please. That'll be $1.45, do you want an apple fritter? No thanks. Ok, drive through."
