I have two Canon printers, one stand alone and one all-in-one. Both work great.

If you're talking about a printer that only does prints then it's like buying a clothes washer that does only whites. Not worth it. when you can buy a printer that does almost everything AND does good photos in more than one size for $80+ with deals, why just buy a dedicated photo printer that does only 1 or 2 snap shot sizes and that's it. That's the short story but the critical part. You could follow up in the technical forum and get some very good specific advice.

My choice is Epsom because they have the best back up support as they hold onto their drivers and ink cartridges longer. HP and Canon put you in a position down the road of scrambling for updated drivers, especially if your in Windows. They want you to buy another printer of course.

No matter which one you choose get into the habit of spraying your prints afterwards, if their precious and you want to keep them. This will protect them better from liquid spills and fading.

If you're really keen on photo printer then check out the Vistek, DV Video Shop, or Henry's web sites for info and good deals

I have an HP Photosmart C4480 (scanner, copier, printer) Works extremely well! Just scanned the lids school pics and printed off a couple extra's... only if compared side by side and with a trained eye can you tell the difference.

Ink cost a FARKING fortune though!
3x5 and 4x6 cost you .50 to $2.00 each depending on paper and inks used. It's the 8x10s that'll kill you with a cost approx. $8-$12 each. Look at printer with individual ink cartridges as you'll go through certain colours faster and can replace them as needed.

WARNING 1: A "3 in 1" $100 home printer will never match the quality and durability of a $300,000 laboratory printer at Black's. For important prints, take them to Black's and pay the 29 cents.

Very true, but where can you get good reprints for .29?

I think the standard charge for a 4x6 print at Black's is 29cent. Cheaper at your local "mom and pop" photo store. Unless the technology has improved, the shelf life of a home print is probably no more than 5 years (maybe "spraying" helps?).

its for my mom. I wanted something she can just stick in her memory stick into and hit print.

as simple as possible, since she's not very tech savvy and too many steps will end up with me doing the prints for her.

There are a lot of full size printers with that USB option, as well as input from SD and CF storage media from cameras. You mention memory stick. Does that mean her camera is a Sony with it's unique memory stick. If so ask if various printer have a compatible input. If it's a case of 'keep it simple' then the dedicated printers might be the answer but go to Vistek and Henrys sites as suggested to get some initial info and then go to the stores. I find the Future Shop/Best Buy/Black's staff just don't know enough - I stump them all the time when shopping for me or others.
