Hi all,
As some of you are aware Sex Professionals of Canada is involved in a constitutional legal challenge, headed by Alan Young, to decriminalize the Canadian prostitution laws by seeking the constitutional invalidation of s.210 (bawdy house), s.212(1)(j) (living on the avails) and s.213(1)(c) communicating for the purpose of prostitution) of the Criminal Code.
Although the act of prostitution itself is legal in Canada the provisions challenged in this application operate to deny sex workers safe legal options for the conducting of legal business. The applicants will argue in court that the combined effect of these three provisions violates s.7 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms by depriving sex workers of their right to liberty and security in a manner that is not in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice.
This legal challenge is being conducted on a pro-bono basis by Alan Young of Osgoode Hall Law School, Stacey Nichols of Neuberger Rose LLP, Ron Marzel, Matthew Wilton, Paul Burstein, and volunteer law students. In effort to raise money for this legal challenge Goodhandy’s (Toronto’s Pansexual Playhouse) will be hosting a Red Light Night on Sunday July 22nd 2007.
The purpose for this night is to not only raise funds for the upcoming legal challenge but to create fun, relaxed place for sex workers, their allies and admirers to hang out, dance, drink, network, and enjoy life! Their will also be entertainment (including performances by Mirha-Soleil Ross, Milo de Milo, and more), and an exotic bake sale. So come on out for a good time for a good cause, “it’ll be a real ho’ down”!
Cost of admission is $10.00 or pay what you can.
Doors open at 9:00pm and the show starts at 11:00pm
