A Hong Kong spa is offering to help people lose weight by setting them on fire. Customers at The Life of Life Healing Spa are smeared with Chinese herbs, doused with alcohol and set alight, for about $150 a session. The spa claims that the intense heat of the fire penetrates deep tissue, increasing circulation and helping the body to absorb the herbal concoction. Results, it adds, are immediate. "It is perfectly safe," said owner Karen Chu. "You are protected from the flame by wet towels. . . . It is only the Westerners who are afraid of the fire. When I explain what will happen they say: 'Whoa, you are going to barbecue me!' If a customer is really afraid we don't go ahead. You need to be able to bear the heat."
