I was wondering who would start this thread and you were on the top of the list.

That's the sum total of your contribution? I'm disappointed, sort of.

How about armed mop charged police line from behind vehicles and from long grass. Worst violence in 30 years. 200 arrests made after tragedy.

I saw the vid on CNN as bodies fell to the ground, really hard to watch, very sad.

The death of 30 protestors is always difficult to view; armed thugs 'stupidly' charging heavily armed police, not so much. Many South African are also shocked.

The conditions offered south african mine workers are pathetic, maybe that plays a part in the situation.

I have no doubt. Mine work is terrible inSA, but you don't charge a line of police, armed with semi auto and fully auto weapons. Taking a knife to a gun fight comes to mind. Something tells me that the miner leaders/shop stewards were no where near the front of the line.

There is a large dispute going on between the NUM (which is aligned with the ANC) and a new more agressive union.

I don't care if I lose my freedom or my life, I can't remain silent. Shooting Black people is unacceptable. Since the shooters are Black I doubt that anybody on this Board cares.

Well considering that these demonstrators were charging forward, wielding very lethal weapons and one officer was really close them, I'm not in agreement on that on either count. It's interesting that you feel it was necessary to use the adjective 'black' as if that was the deciding factor.

Something tells me you won't be losing your life.

Keep digging Phil.

Was it really necessary to shoot them dead with automatic weapons? Were there no other options?
The striking miners had killed two security guards and two policemen.

Apparently saner heads have prevailed in the country.

Initially 270 miners were charged with murder of ~30 of their fellow workers, based on an archaic apartheid period law on the books. A swell of anger from the electorate have had the police decide on a different path. The charges were provisionally dropped. Apparently SA has grown some since the dark days of Apartheid.

Are we returning to a time when unions had to really fight for jobs and protection?
