Call the cops and let them deal with it.

I was out on a date at the drive in about 8 years back and a family pulled up within a foot of the driver's side. A kid got out of the back with no pretense at trying to avoid slamming the door into my car. I got out and flagged down the driver who said "I don't see anything". Luckily I had a a flashlight and showed him the ding. Then he said "how do we know that came from my car". I asked him to open his door and what do you know, it lined up exactly. He paid me $100 out of pocket and aside from doing a little touch up with paint, left it alone. $100 - $14.99 for paint stick = $85 in my pocket.

In your case, since you two have obviously left the scene it will probably be more difficult for him to prove it was you. The onus is on him. Usually you should just follow Ceiling Cat's advice and contact the police if both parties disagree.

If it's a ding, I doubt the police would spend any time on it. The person with the ding that you didn't cause can go thru their insurance to get it fixed (paying a deductible 500/1000). In other words they are SOL.

Unless a third party witness comes forward, it's your word against theirs. No settlement needed unless you feel guilty. Luckily, I drive a drive a Saturn with plastic doors that pop back into shape even at 1ook on a snowy night on the 401 when I did a 180 and bounced off the inner retaining wall. I swore I'd never buy anything but Saturn again. Unfortunately they're extinct now.

I had someone backup on my drivers door in a shopping plaza while I was stopped . The person wanted to give me a cash payment. I said let the insurance deal with it. We exchange info, my insurance co says no fault. Shopping plazas private property, cops don't bother only if a personnel injury or hit and run if someone is a witness, not a public roadway. Next time, take the cash payment, insurance companies are scum.

I'd say the accuser doesn't have a leg to stand on. Onus is on them to prove it. Not worth their getting a lawyer. Maybe small claims? If they do that, you should deny deny deny. If he doesn't have video of you dinging his door its a he-said-she-said scenario. Nearly impossible for him to get a ruling in his favour (?).

So, I'd politely tell them to fuck off, offer them nothing, and let them stew in their juices.

So...I'm sitting in a parking lot at the grocery store the other day, waiting for someone to back out, so I can take their spot. This women driver comes up beside me, going the other way, and hits my mirror, and knocks it back into the recessed position with her mirror. I'm sitting completely still. She rolls down the window, and tells me I should get out of her way, because I saw her coming. WTF? I said "lady...YOU hit me". She then curses me and takes off.

Anyone want to guess the nationality of this women driver?

Since this is sort of related to the OP's original post, what's everyone position on when someone parks so close to them in a parking lot, you can't get in the drivers side?

Since I drive a Ford Edge (with a center console) and they have what seems to me to be the widest doors of any vehicle I've ever driven, it's proved to be a real problem. I'm a big guy...bad back and knees...so climbing over the center hump isn't an option.

Since I got the vehicle in 2007, I've had this happen to me about 6 times...each time, I've had to find someone very small to climb in for me, and back the car out.

I've been sorely tempted to leave a "fuck you for parking so close" note, and "key" the offending car as a lesson. Or...would that make me a douchebag?

Short story.

I pulled into a spot a bit over a year ago and a guy immediately pulled into the spot next to me real close. I did not even have time to take it out of gear he had pulled in so fast. He immediately opened the door and banged me. Then he sat in his car and talked to his woman.

I calmly walked around and asked him what he was doing and if he noticed that he dinged me fairly bad. I was driving a fairly expensive and pristine vehicle and it would be an expensive repair. Even a minor blemish would leave such a vehicle unsightly.

He acted like he could not hear me so I repeated myself nicely. "Did you notice that you dinged my car?" He stated no and then his women went onto a tirade. I asked her to please be quite while I discuss this with him. She continued and started to insult my female passenger. I asked her if she would like me to contact the police. She continued and then he stared to get pushy. I asked my passenger to go into the nearby building and contact the police so she could be out of the line of fire - so to speak.

Immediately both asshats came at me and pushed me one too many times. I love it when a woman gets pushy with a man since she thinks he cannot defend himself or that her man will defend her. I "assisted" the woman back to her seat and closed the door. Then I threw a beat down on the driver that I doubt he will ever forget and "assisted" him back to his seat.

They threatened to call the police and I stated that they need not threat as I have already done so and they should just wait a few minutes for the police to show up. I stated that I would be doing just that and stood there. I guess I should mention that I am not a small person and can be rather imposing. It always makes me wonder why people want to get physical.

After a few additional minutes of the typical standoff and leering to try to retain their pride they wised up and left quickly. I noted the time, location , plate number. and description of the asshats. I have yet to hear a word. This will be going on two years shortly.

Moral(s) of the story. Be polite. Be in the right. Defend what is yours. React only if provoked. Hold your ground and don't overcompensate. Anyone ever see Roadhouse?

If you are interested it was about a $1500 repair and I sold the car and got a new one. In response to CapitalGuy's statement, they told me to fuck off multiple times and I was stewing but then they got physical. They lost that deal. Was it worth $1500? No. but it was worth more than not "educating" them.

Wrong. Someone backed into my wife's car in a parking lot. No personal injury and there were witnesses. The person offered a cash payment but we refused. Cop also investigated it.

Holy shit, I use to use those notes over 30 years ago, do they still have them? lol

I use to copy those words on yellow paper an stick it on their windshield so it looked like a ticket, lol, they would be pissed when they see it from afar thinking they got a ticket, and then get more pissed when they read it, lmao, point being they park so damn close to one side of the parking lines it makes it difficult to open your door without touching their car.

& people laugh at my shitty car! I could care less if somebody dinged my car!
The only really smart post here. They're cars folks, not precious possessions. Except for a very few exceptions they lose value everyday just by existing, certainly by being used as intended, unlike real, useful goods, like say art.

The real scam is that morons talking to morons have given us cars with paint jobs like the finish on fine furniture (the stuff that appreciates in value) and then we take them into, of all places, supermarkets parking-lots! In any rational world they'd be galvanized and sold raw for you to paint. Or not.

Go to West Marine and get a half dozen boat fenders and hang them off the sides like sensible folks who know no one but them cares about their own foolishly prized possessions.

So the salesman said to the couple who'd just bought their first brand-new car, "I know you're dreading taking it off the lot, and getting that first scratch. For $100 cash I have a treatment that eliminates that fear".

Sounded good, so they paid, and he walked over and keyed the car.

"There, no First Scratch Fear now!"

As Asterix said. "You Romans are crazy"

I shouldn't have used the word "ding" because it was actually less than that, more like scuff marks that I'm sure could be buffed out.

i was backing into a spot and hit a car with my old work truck when i drove a flat bed 1tonne pick up. dinged the guys hood up pretty good, some guy stopped and demanded i leave a note. so i did "sorry about your car" and i scampered off before i got caught. karma is a bitch and almost killed me in a near fatal car accident 2 years later. i ended up with with a concussion, whiplash, 4 cracked ribs, fractured arm, swollen spine and dislocated hip. that's what i get for scraping a hood.
