I'm not very computer literate, but some girl I know told me that you can google a persons email address and find out what sites they belong to and their internet activities (ie dating sites, or sites that a person has registered to ( maybe even this one?) etc) I was just wondering if this was true, and how to go about it? or if there is away to track someones internet activity based on an email address?

I hate to tell you how appropriate your handle is.

Try googling your name/e-mail etc and see what happens.

Try it, and you'll find your own answer.....
Maybe you need it explained....turn on computer, get on internet, go to www.google.com, and do a search on your email address. Now wasn't that easy?

IHe is sooo stupid, he thought that picking that name would make him sound more intelligent!

It's not very effective. I just googled four of my email addresses and in total I got 3 hits.

But here's a tip: use different email accounts for different things. For porn and TERB, I use one account. For personal I use another. For personal I use another. And for anything else I use another. It sounds complicated but it has proven its value over the years.

It is possible to find some information by googling an email address ... but that depends more on you registering on sites that require you give them your email address and the security the site uses to protect your email information.

Most sites require you to give them your email address in order to register (if you don't register then of course your email address is usually pretty safe, but if you use some older Internet browsers, your email address can still be "gathered" by web sites set up to do so.)

On the other hand, most web sites that require you to register also give you the option of letting everyone see your email address or keeping it hidden (always hide it, unless you're a complete idiot who loves spam.)

So short answer .. yes, it is possible, but in reality it isn't that big an issue if you take simple precautions.

As Keebler Elf suggests, having more than one email account to use for your different activities is a very good idea.

Keeping emails separate for different activities is the way to go.

Also picking a user name that is indpendent to you - ie don't use MapleLeafsFan if you are known in the real world as one. This is the reason I chose needinit as a handle on this website: a word play on why I am here along with a generic code word (need initialize) which can appear as pretty much garbage text in search results.
