Hi, was wondering if someone could help me. I want to transfer stills and short video clips from my mini-dv cam to my laptop, I've got the firewire cable, the Windows Movie Maker program did not work at all. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance :)

I am surprised your camcorder didnt come with at least some basic video transfer and manipulation software. I find the ULead Video Studio line to be a good balance of ease of use and capabilities. Ok, so it costs $100 to buy, but you can get a free trial from http://www.download.com/Ulead-VideoStudio/3000-13631_4-10665275.html?tag=lst-2

Also if you are rinning Windows XP SP2 you may well have difficulties with firewire conections.

I noticed bestbuy.ca has software called 'Sony Vegas Movie Studio+DVD'. Does anyone have any experience with it?

I just tried to create a DVD from my Sony digital camcorder and I had no real luck with the software that came with the recorder.

Roxio's software (v.9) works with my Panasonic cam with firewire
Larry, can I set up the DVD into different track?, IE New Years, followed by Easter, then a birthday or 2 and then Christmas? Or would I have to scan through the movie to see what I'm looking for? I can't get that definitive answer on the Roxio website.

Sounds like you need to set them up as chapters. I've done that with Roxio.

I have Sony Vegas Movie Studio and find it very easy to edit and create a DVD. Yes it allows chapters and has DVD templates built in.
