Smith sentenced to death for killing Carlie Brucia

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — A former mechanic convicted of raping and murdering 11-year-old Carlie Brucia, whose abduction was caught on a car wash security camera, was sentenced to death Wednesday for her murder.

The jury that convicted Joseph Smith in November had recommended by a vote of 10-2 that he be executed.

Smith, 39, showed no emotion Wednesday as state Circuit Judge Andrew Owens read the official sentences — death for the murder count and life in prison for kidnapping and sexual battery.

i know there was a discussion on here a couple of weeks back about the death penalty. I noticed that many of you were for it and many of you were against it.

I'm against the death penalty mostly becasue its not administered fairly and it is fraught with discrimination and mistake. However, in this case, this person does not deserve to live. If I was the father of this girl - I would have put a bullet in this guy myself.

well I said I'm against the death penalty because it is not administered fairly and with reasonable consistency and it is fraught with discrimination and mistake.

I look at it more as a constitutional issue. The courts and the legislators have struggled to create legal formulas and procedural rules in decding who should live and who should die.

I also have to say i'm not for the death penalty. One reason is what yesguy siad, some ppl are wrongfully convicted. I also agree that every criminal has their rights and i believe with the right system in place, it could help a lot of ppl turn good. Its not impossible for a criminal to serve time than turn to good when they get out.
But then you have cases like this. In case like this i'm not against the DP. Yesguy you're right, i do have somewhat of "favoritism" in this case due to the crime and age etc.
This is our kids we are dealing with. Many of whom are so young they dont know whats going on or what/how to react.
Between a guy who robs my kid or sold them drugs etc. and raping my kid, i'd want the worst you can get for the rapist.
