Exactly the reason why my very first smartphone was only a year ago and I didn't dive into any line up for the first iPhone (or get one the "day before"), Android or any of that other shit.
It's stressing and 99% of us don't realize exactly how it's so pervasive and how much it really affects us.

Exactly the reason i don't have a silly smart phone period. No one really 'needs' one just like no one 'needs' to check on their e-mail 50 times a day, and no one needs to carry a camera around 27/7.

VW reference is old: https://terb.cc/vbulletin/showthread.php?366311-A-Time-to-Tune-Out&highlight=

They called them crack berries for a reason.... I loved the story about the guy who started RIM (or maybe he was the president at the time) having his taken away by his wife on weekends because he`d hide in the closet and do email.....

LOL

Just because some guys are alcoholics doesn`t mean the rest of us can`t drink....

VW references is within the article posted, or are you having one of those "I posted that first" childish moment?
Better email Mashable and tell them you posted it two weeks prior to their article and that you should get a cookie.

As for your alcoholics analogy, incredibly weak because the point is, that smartphones are incredibly invasive whether we realize it or not.
Try again?

Smartphones are not invasive, they are tools... how you use them might be invasive but that's a personal behavior issue not a tool issue....

Agreed.

I turn off all notifications except for voice. My reasoning is if its really really important -- they'll call. I also set email to manually. It checks only when I launch it.

That's pretty funny coming from the guy who was bragging that he got his iPhone4 a day before launch, behaviour issues no doubt.

Another funny one...

Apple makes a big stink (hype) about the 4S and "Siri", you change your mind from getting the HTC Titan or Microsoft`s phone.. to the 4S because it`s a "game changer"
https://terb.cc/vbulletin/showthrea...the-iPhone-5&p=3727390&viewfull=1#post3727390
So who`s the dog in this scenario? lol

Btw, Siri was available on the iPhone well before Apple bought it...
But once Apple bought it, pumped it up a bit, people salivated at the ring of Apple`s bell (Pavlov`s theory at work).

However, manually checking your mail means you have to consciously decide that "hey, I wonder if I have any mail..." and you go to check it "manually", which is kind of the point.

Just the fanbois and chumps.

I'm quite happy with Skype and Google Voice which cost me a grand total of $30 the last 1½ years......:thumb:

How much did YOU shell out to Berlin, et al., for your iToy in that time frame???

Speaking of Siri.........Woz says before Apple bought them, Siri the app "just worked". but after Apple took over all of a sudden he was getting many irrelevant replies and was more an advertising vehicle than what it was intended. ie. he would ask Siri for prime numbers over 87 and get a correct response....after Apple the response would offer local places for prime rib or prime realestate........he would ask what are the great lakes in California and get real results, now he asks and gets real estate information......and thats when it can actually connect to the server.

It figures!
In this respect Apple is getting just as bad or worse than M$, FFS!
They take a good idea and fark it up and subvert it into doing something else that only diminishes its capabilities. Then you have fanbois and company knob gobblers who endlessly trot out charts deluding this proves this subversion was an improvement.....

For the past 3 years I have been taking at least one vacation a year to somewhere that my Blackberry won't work (I was smart enough to not ask my company for worldwide coverage on the BB they give me). So, I CANNOT check work emails at all. I accept the risk that my direct reports may make decisions on their own, and that my designated replacement has to actually do my job for the couple weeks I'm away. Other vacations, I remain in contact for emergency purposes, and generally check the BB every day or two, once a day as opposed to throughout the day, if only to screen for those high-priority situations where my early intervention might save me trouble down the road.

There is an enormous difference in my mental state during the two different types of holiday (stay in touch or be out of touch). When I can't check my emails, I am fully refreshed, zoned out, recharged, happy, reflective, etc, pick your word. The vacation works its magic when I have left my work BB at home and have no idea what's going on in the office. The North American holidays, when I can and do check my emails, I am still relaxed of course, but I'm still at work, mentally. I do not separate from the office to nearly the same extent as when I am out of touch completely. They are two incomparable experiences. Having your BB with you on holiday defeats the purpose of a holiday. It does not recharge you.

Blackberries suck. I like them so that during the workday, when I'm out and about, I can remain in touch with the office. But after working hours we should not have to check our BBs. Managers checking their BB after working hours should carry the same financial compensation as blue collar guys being called in to work after hours, ie. 4 hours minimum pay no matter how long they work. My company should have to pay me.... pick a figure.... $100??... each time I respond to a BB email after work. They are intrusive and are fucking up our lives. We are always at work, like it or not. And as senior management/executive branch, you can't simply say no. Wah wah wah.
