I grew up in the country..so far away from civilization that cars on the road were a rarity after 10 PM...Never had a problem sleeping
I moved to the GTA in 1980...and there was always activity around...dogs barking...drunks screamin at eachother...cars on the highway...trains going by...and so on..took me about a year to get acclimatized to it all.....NOW....I cant sleep unless I hear it!!!WTF!

The S/O was overseas for a month....and I missed her Snoring!( among other things)...so...I tossed and turned for hours...luckily..our Bulldog..helped with her nasal serenade so i could sleep....we have a fan in our bedroom that is just a shade off balance ...so I get that little..rhythmic wom..wom...wom all night too....It must be similar to white noise I guess....:frown:

Anyone else have this problem?

Whats your secret to a good nights sleep...cus right now I aint gettin' it!!:(

That's funny - I do the exact same thing! I have the fan in my bedroom year-round. But in the colder months I turn it away from me so I don't feel it but I still hear the humming. I also have a white noise machine (I like the crickets or the thunderstorm). I occasionally sleep with the radio on.

I grew up in a noisy environment and hate absolute silence. I know other people who do similar things so you're not alone.

This is entirely normal and eventually (even as you did when you moved to Toronto) you adjust. In the meantime as suggested use a fan and/or a white noise machine.

Put on soft music with a timer to turn itself off.

You'll fall asleep and the music will have shut itself off by then.
lots of internet stuff for sleeping

I like Gregorian chants. I bought some stereo speakers for my computer for this reason

some of the stuff is created to help you sleep, lucid dream etc

use " BING"

you can time your computer to shut down using your "Task Scheduler"

BTW Senior Draper, learn to lucid dream. That is where you know you are dreaming and you can interact and control your dream. Soon you will be toasting Katherine Jenkins as she falls into your arms while your voices spin diamonds in the air !

I go through phases of what I want to listen to while trying to fall asleep: porn, ocean sounds, light music, old time radio, or a whirring fan. I don't know what it says about me that I find women moaning and whimpering to be soothing. I'm claustrophobic so I have my balcony door very slightly ajar throughout the year. The only time it gets shut is around Canada Day cuz fireworks send my puppy into a frenzy.

I downloaded a white noise machine from iTunes and use that whenever I can't sleep. I usually go for either the rainstorms or beach waves and I fall asleep right away.

I use a fan as well, though when it does get off balance and that "wom..wom..wom" sound starts up I have to give it a kick to shut it up.

I've tried some white noise apps, but I find the sound too unnatural, like there's no depth to it.

I used to go to sleep with the radio on when I was a kid. Haven't tried that in awhile....
