"I want to be a model."

If your daughter says that, you've officially failed as a father. Not as bad as if she's on a brass pole, but getting there.

It's the equivalent of saying, "I have nothing to offer but my looks."

I'm almost to the point of openly rolling my eyes at girls/women who make this statement.

I once asked my daughter where I failed her, when she was home and asked where the recycling bin is.

hmmmmm my daughter said that when she was 16. Wanted to be like her mom. After about 18 months she gave up on it. Pay was pretty good but she found the days verry long and amazingly mind numbing after the first few times. She only worked for Eaton's catalog though.

Sadly she decided law was a good career choise after that.

I want to be a lawyer.

If your daughter says that, you've officially failed as a father.

At least a lawyer is an aspiration that relies on more than her looks. And requires a brain.

Well several I work with mainly have looks and a good memory. Bit of theatrical skills I guess.

You should all be encouraging your daughters to join the sex trade. Or at least to be sluts. And to sleep with older guys. Thank you.

At six, it would be a cute thing for her to say, at sixteen, just be happy that's she's not saying she wants to move in with her 23 year old unemployed boyfriend.

um...as a photographer, i kinda think that's a ridiculous statement...

sure, she may be buying into the 'supermodel' dream, but there's nothing to say she can't continue her education while working, and earn a significant income...

as a father, you should support her in whatever she wants to do...(within reason, obviously)

I doubt I have it quite right but I must quote Zoolander:

"So Derek when did you decide you wanted to be a model?"

"I remember when I was 3 and I caught my reflection in my spoon while eating cereal I thought to myself 'Hey, your rediculously good looking, maybe you can do that for a living."

"Do what?"

"Be...professionally good looking."

When your daughter has gone over to the feminazis:

"All sex is rape, you chauvinist SOB! I hate you!"
Thats only when she's read Dworkin (I may be spelling her name wrong, it's been a few years since I've read her work) haveh her read a even moderately wide breadth of feminist writing and she will evolve beyond this.

You are absolutely right on. If I meet a woman who wants to be a model I know that I have found someone with low self esteem who is just begging to be manipulated and controlled.
