Roger Ebert is not well and may not see out the year. There was a time when he and Gene Siskel were TV gold. Here is a classic clip of some of their outtakes...they may have not been the best of friends. lol

He just wrote a piece about his declining health. All the surgeries on his mouth and throat have taken a toll on him.
He writes a lot of interesting essays in his online journals.

His essays while he waits to die are probably the most interesting stuff he's ever written.

I used to watch Siskel and Ebert religiously but stopped when Gene passed away. I also used to read Gene's reviews on the Chicago Tribune; I've tried other film critics but no one was better than him. It's too bad to see him like this.

There's been other movie review shows since but Siskel and Ebert were the original & best IMHO.

I always found the contrast between the two of them to be the most interesting detail. Siskel represented the average, normal, escapist movie goer who just wanted to be entertained versus Ebert's more prolific, romantic and elevated view of cinema. Both had very distinct and valid view points on how to approach film. Ebert managed to keep the show going with Roeper (who is a complete film moron, IMHO) and now A.O Scott and Michael Phillips have it going. Both Phillips and Scott have way to high of a 'geek factor' going to watch them but I do enjoy reading their reviews. Along with Champlin, Canby, Kael (may she shovel shit and watch only Ken Russell films in hell for all eternity) Ebert and the rest were pioneers in separating film-watching from 'gossip' mongering and leaving the Louella Parsons era behind in Hollywood. Ebert also did wonders for the rise of foreign film in the one market that disdains (much to their detriment) sub-titles unlike any other continent or culture.

His opinion on film will be remembered and continue to be an influence.

I always did like Ebert because he was fair about movies and put them in the context they were made in. He likes his action flicks and foreign art house films, he has always said there is really no point in comparing the 2 since they are not the same. There is an article in this month's either GQ or Esquire with a recent pic of him which I found quite shocking at first, but given the state of his health not surprising after.

Those outtakes are hilarious I'd never seen either one be so funny...

Base on those I don't think they hated one-another - quite the opposite - although like a lot of co-workers they'd get on each-other's nerves a lot.

Youtube has plenty of Siskel and Ebert reviews from the 80s and 90s:

Schindler's List, Titanic, The Untouchables, etc.

Since no else mentioned it I would like to send out two thumbs way up for Roger Ebert. I enjoyed S & E through their run.

I didn't always agree with their opinions but I did enjoy their dialogue. S & E helped me look deeper into ideas and introduced me to movies that I would not have otherwise watched.
