The law is, correct me if I am wrong, under 16 is illegal unless the child was under your care before 16 then you have to wait untill they are 18

Should these laws be changed?

After all they were made before the internet

Teens are different now with their knowledge and acceptance of sex

Some kids are more emotionally immature than in the past, some are less but we need a defined line.
We can't just look at each circumstance and make the rules as we go, but I think some cases deserve leniency or even a blind eye.

This is not an old law at all.

The first Harper government raised the age of consent to 16 from 14.

I don`t recall if The Telegraph article mentions it, but even if the student had been 16 it still would have been illegal since like a great many jurisdictions in England and Wales there is a special provision of law dealing with teachers and students. I believe in England it raises the age of consent to 18; in many other places it applies until the student leaves school.

Agree almost 100 % , except perhaps we can make the rules as we go ? I see your point but it is based on an assumption and most assumptions are false (including the one I just made )

Interestingly, in the present case the girl wanted the relationship to continue, according to her it is good for her

Why is her opinion irrelevant ?

Someone like Noir, Jenna and almost any Terb Babe giving me a BS when I was 15 ( or 14 or 13 or ...) would have been fantastic !!!!!!!!!!!!

I resent, never having had the opportunity for a SP when I was under 18, much less 15

To those who say there has to one law for everyone I say what about the rights of the teen to have something they may desperately need ?

Yup. In most places you can't have a sexual relationship with anyone under the age of EIGHTEEN if you are in a position of "trust or authority" over that person, such as a student/teacher relationship.

Even over the age of eighteen there's still a lot of hot water associated with dating someone when you are in a position of trust or authority over them: A boss who hits on his 40 year old secretary is open to charges of sexual harassment because even if she seems to be consenting she could claim later that she felt she couldn't say no out of fear for her job. Ditto a university professor with his adult graduate student, "I thought I had to sleep with him or he would fail me", and so on.

Absolutely, the best advice for any of us who have attraction towards someone in any of these categories is ask if there is any feeling and if so remove yourself from being in a position of trust or authority over them without changing their postion e.g. a lateral transfer or saying you can no longer be their physician, lawyer, priest (non R.C.) etc. . . and make sure that they are not left hanging, and before doing this seek advice.

It is even worse than that if you are a doctor. Just heard this 42 year old doctor was suspended by the College for dating a FORMER patient OVER THE AGE Of 18.

BTW I think that the age of consent should be raised to 35. Why should younger people have any fun:p?

wasn't it recently upped to 16 from 14?
It has to be kept in mind that we are discussing a multiplicity of jurisdictions. What is legal in X, may be illegal in Y, or vis versa.

This case occurred in the U.K. which by the way has three different legal jurisdictions.

I think we need to be very careful in outlawing any forms of consensual behaviour, especially ones that can turn an 18 year old kid into a registered sex offender.

A former patient seems very unusual perhaps it started when she was still a patient.

Bottom line, Clergy, Lawyers, Physicians etc. . . have to be very careful. Seek advice from your professional association as to how to navigate the minefield.

The doctor's name is Donovan Sequeira. He terminated the doctor/patient relationship BEFORE they started dating.
I don't doubt you, but I see that the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario has not yet posted the hearing results on their website - not that the hearing results posted there are particularly informative.

It does sound harsh, but I just don't know enough.

I can't believe anyone thinks it should be lowered. Seriously, guys, give your heads a shake. It should be raised to 18, but maintain the "close in age" provision at 5 years for 16 year olds, and reduce to 3 years for 14-15 year olds.

Can any of you guys who voted to reduce it give me one good reason why? Disturbing...
