Should I buy an Ipod?

I'm waffling back and forth. I kinda feel like it's a ripoff right now, especially the more expensive versions. I might get the Ipod Mini, but I just can't decide.

I don't have a HUGE collection of songs, so having the latest and greatest isn't necessary.

Thoughts?

It can be used as an external drive... plus one step closer to joining the evil Apple "Empire"

I bought one and even though it is an amazing device for the intended purpose, I am not a music lover and I don't have a huge collection of music so I ended up feeling it was quite a waste of my money and ended up returning it.

It's a must have only if you're into music and mp3s.

Cheers,

Instead of an IPOD, get the new Sony Ericsson P910i Cell Phone which is Cell Phone, PDA, and MP3 player in one. Fido is carrying it right now, but you can buy it on the web and activate it on Rogers for cheaper than the Fido price.

In depends on your needs.
Do you need to carry around a 4GB or 20 GB hard drive?
What will you use it for?
Are you a casual listener of music?
Do you have the need to carry and transport large files?

These are just a few questions. IMHO you should buy something that will match your need. Don't buy because evrybody else does. With the way technology moves, the IPOD of today is the Betamax recorder of tomorrow.

The current issue of Cigar Afficianado has a very good article on the various MP3 players (both with disk drives and solid-state units).

Go to a cigar shop, by a Montecristo #2 and the mag and enjoy.

An alternative to an IPod, for around the same cost you can get either a Palm Tungsten, or a Pocket PC.

Both PDAs can play mp3s, watch videos, pictures, play games, plus the usual PDA functions...

I got a 10 gig a couple of years ago and love it, I upgraded this year to a 40g. I only have about 300 cd's but they are all on it with room to spare. I think it is great because of the size, ease of use and reliablility. I use mine when I run 4 or 5 days a week up to 10 miles at a time and it's held up great. You can also get an fm transmitter to use it in the car or on your home stereo to eliminate the need to carrry cd's with you when you drive. Alpine now has an in car adapter that allows you to control the ipod from an Alpine car stereo plus it charges it at the same time. It's only money! Get one!

But then you'll have to buy the dock as well which is another $49.99.

All in all, get the 40 gb.

Exactly. Why would anyone spend the dough on a 4GB Mini, when you can get a 20GB for a bit more.

Second, for me, photography capabilities is an issue and the newest version of the ipod still misses my needs.

When they design an ipod that can capture photos as you shoot them (like a computer can) then I will invest in one, but not until then.

I guess I'll have to wait and see what the next edition ipod brings.

I've heard that it's possible to dump digital camera pictures to your ipod for storage so there's no need to bring a laptop along for trips, etc ....

Yeah, you have to buy the Media Read adapter so you can plug in your camera's memory cards and DL them into the IPOD. Nice thing about the iPod is that it is modular and you can buy whatever accessory you want a la carte. Bad thing about it is that you have to carry all these extra accessories... not to mention, if you want to do this, you need that which equals more $$. Apple folks ain't stupid. More money is to be made by selling the accessories.

Then there's the iPod photo (basically a colour version of the iPod) and if you want to DL photos into it from memory cards, you still need to buy the media reader accessory. ARGH!
