I just got my credit card statement in the mail, and for the second time in as many months there was an erroneous charge on it. I called customer service and was told it was probably just a mistake. They are going through the usual investigation etc.

Granted, the charges were for minor amounts; however I am a bit put off by the frequency of the occurences. Either something is amiss, or someone needs to be a lot more careful when posting transactions.

I'm a bit cautious as I already had to get a replacement card once when I was stung for about 5 grand last year before the fraud detection kicked in and alerted the bank about it.

Any thoughts??

Just remember where you spend your money and keep all your reciepts, my Dad has his card counterfitted at a gas station somehow, the next day whoever did it tried to buy $3000 worth of electronics. The crdit card company called us because this kind of activity was unusual. So I say just watch what people do when you give them your credit card. Like at a gas station if they swipe it over the counter, dont let it out of your sight, they could be swiping it under the counter too...it's happened!

Well that is my point... usually they take you for as much as they can as fast as they can. With me it's just been one transaction per statement, with last month's being ok... just small amounts. Doesn't make much sense to me.

I talked to customer service again and was advised to monitor my transactions for the time being. They will look into it from their end.

5 grand , and it happened before ?

Yes you should be concerned.

If you can, cancel that particular card and apply for a new one with another company or instituition.

Document all your correspondence with your card company in future. Too many chances for inside job nowadays, doc. IF the problem persists, call the police and file a report. Let's hope the bad guys have not zoned in your identity and other info.

Get a shredder

I have had to deal with identity theft before. I got a $4K cell phone bill ( I did not have a cell phone) and I got 2 tickets for reckless driving and speeding in Ottawa (I was in toronto at the time), I paid the tickets because it would have cost more time and money to fix the problem. Got a shredder for all bills and statements, haven't had a problem for the last 2 years....

A shredder is a good idea. Make sure to get the cross cut one, spews out confetti. The ribbon shredder output can be reassembled given enough time and patience.

Can't be too cautious these days with reports of identity theft being reported as often as they have been in recent months.

change the card!

I would change the card asap! or possibly use another credit card, look into maybe AMEX - provides for better customer protection.

With most cards your maximum liability is $50.00. For this reason the banks keep a close eye out for fraudulent use. My card has been changed by the bank 4 times in the last year and a half.
