im looking to insure myself on my brothers car, for a month.
it is a leased car and is sitting collecting dust until his term runs out (in three months)
he has canceled his own insurance on it.

im not having any luck so far. most terms are for a year, with hefty fines if you cancel.
every insurance company i have found that offers daily insurance is UK based.

any suggestions?

I'm pretty sure the leasing company would want insurance on the vehicle, even if it is sitting collecting dust. Your brother may want to check his lease papers

I agree with this posting. Any sort of lease or bank loan of a car requires they buyer to keep full insurance on his/her car. Usually in this case if the insurance is canceled the insurance Co, notifies the leasing company. That is what usually happens. It seems weird though .

...to say this is totally right. The leasing company will not care ONE WIT if the car is inside a bank vault...part of the terms of the lease is that it be insured AT ALL TIMES. They will absolutely go ape shit if they find out it isn't insured, and you do NOT want to be the person driving it if their is an accident once they find this out...

...which leads to my 2nd point...

You can buy insurance for YOURSELF (liability..at least you can in the U.S.). Lots of people who do not own cars have liability insurance so they can rent...in Texas it is in fact the law (if you have a drivers license you have to have liability insurance).

You however cannot insure a car you do not own or are not leasing...meaning you cannot get COMPREHENSIVE insurance on your brother's car, because you are not your brother. And THAT is what the leasing company cares about...that the CAR is insured.

In other words...you can insure yourself...but you cannot insure the car...it doesn't belong to you.

As MLAM says yuo cann;t insure the car . What you can do is have your brother insure it for you to drive .Put you on as main driver. I did this for my brother ... He had no car and I had two so I went to the insurance company and insured it for him to drive . Seperate policy therfore he just paid the premium. It is all legal and the insurance company had no problem with it .
I have did this with ATV;s too . Buddy has one and does not have insurance on it . So when I wanted to use it on GOVT land . I needed insurance , I went to HIS company with him and ADDED it to his policy . I paid the premiums that were extra in this case as they would not insure it seperate . ( Too many reported stolen right after insured ) Therefore had to have your car or truck or house insured with them BEFORE they would insure the ATV .
Hope this helps

What happened to the electric bicycle idea? (see Maya's previous posts). No insurance, no license needed. LOL

Maya..if the insurance for your Brothers car becomes a huge problem...look to the car services in Toronto that allow you to rent a car for a day or a few hours when needed...there are several of them..sorry right now the names escape me...but that might be a better alternative.

celest and i are finally getting around to camping this weekend, and want a car for a week. in this case, zipcar is more expensive then most car rental companies.

btw the cheapest car rental place i have found is these guys, located in kensington market

http://wheels4rent.ca/rentals.html
35$ per day, including insurance, or $200 a week

If Your Going Camping And Using The Highways Using A Type Of Rental Company Like That One, You Might Get Stranded On The Side Of The Highway...

Pay The Difference And Rent From A Reputable Company Such As...
Budget
Avis
Discount
Enterprise

But If You Choose To Wind Up With The Cheaper Rental, Pm Me Cause I Have Roadside Assistance And Willing To Help You Out!

JV has a point there. i rented a car from some cheap no name place in vegas, and got stranged in red rock canyon after dark. came back from a hike in the desert, and when i started a way the CV joint was rapidly coming apart.

they cut corners on service to allow those prices. the big nationals are owned by the auto manufacturers and have the money to be able to service the vehicles and offer only new vehicles.

i just did a search on expedia and most of the big companies were under or just around 200/week. rent on your gold card and liability and comprehensive is included.

enjoy the bush

You can get a Compact for about 180 a week from the big guys without insurance. If you have a credit card it may have car rental insurance on it, check.

Also, the big guys are much more forgiving when it comes to scratches, dents... The little guy may "ding" you for this.

I have to agree with Meister! For the small difference in $$$s the big guys are more reliable...unless maya particularly wants to get stuck in the bush and send PMs to all of us to come to her assistance:)

You have to be careful with Credit Card insurance....some times their fine print conditions exclude windshield damage for certain models...

When I travel for business I rent a car rather than use my own because I hate putting the miles on my car for my company.

I use Enterprise out of the Ken Shaw Lexus Toyota Dealership (now on Dundas and Windermere) because I can rent a Camry as opposed to some stupid piece of shit GM for 39 bucks a day. Insurance is another 20 bucks and is the leave the keys and walk away type.
