I agree but, quite often they don't even know what their "lovely" kids are capable of these days ...
Sorry, but while kids seem to be smarter than I/we were back in the 70's if you've got a band seed on your hands, you know it!
I was listening to the radio after this happened and the DJ was saying that back in the day, the worst thing that could happen is you get your ass wooped. (and maybe a couple of bruises etc). I remember not so much highschool as senior public school there were these two a-holes that took it as their personal mission to make my life miserable. From stealing my bike and then leaving it miles away, to physically punishing me at every oppurtunity etc etc etc. The cops were told countless times, the school officials too but "every kid has a right to an education". I tell you, if I could have gotten my hands on a gun I would have done them. (no doubt about it).
Now where this happened is anyone surprised? I mean Jane-Finch? Come on, that is about the worst area in the city. It was bad when I was younger and hung out up there and now it's worse.
Let's not go off the deep end like we Canadians normally do. This is one incident in how many years? Now if this happens again within 2 or 3 yrs, then yeah, I'd say we have a problem.
Now this next part won't fly very well for some but the story I heard is that the victim was screwing around with firecrackers and threw one at the one who shot him. Now we don't have the WHOLE story but I can surmise that the shooter might not have known it was firecrackers and thought maybe someone was taking shots at him and turned and fired.
Now they will probably paint the kid who was killed as a sweet angel but a) he had his hands on illegal fireworks b) he wasn't just walking down the street minding his own business and c) he had to have known that he might get into trouble throwing the things at people. He didn't deserve to die but, as Kitty Forman used to say: don't poke the bear!!!
