That's sad, my very favourite Floyd songs are with Syd.
Thankfully he left some great and weird tunes for us to enjoy.

See Emily Play

Emily tries but misunderstands, ah ooh
She often inclined to borrow somebodys dreams till tomorrow
There is no other day
Lets try it another way
Youll lose your mind and play
Free games for may
See emily play

Soon after dark emily cries, ah ooh
Gazing through trees in sorrow hardly a sound till tomorrow

There is no other day
Lets try it another way
Youll lose your mind and play
Free games for may
See emily play

Put on a gown that touches the ground, ah ooh
Float on a river forever and ever, emily br>
There is no other day
Lets try it another way
Youll lose your mind and play
Free games for may
See emily play

Syd was one of those pioneers whose influence on rock was so profound that today it's difficult to appreciate how innovative his playing really was at the time (i.e. back when the average rock guitar solo consisted of a little pentatonic ditty with no effects used), and he was also one of the few figures whose sphere of influence went beyond classic rock to encompass punk and alternative music as well. Truly one of the giants of modern art, he will always shine on through his impact.

Definitely one of the sad stories of rock n roll..... a talent that burned himself out at a young age and not able to enjoy the fruits of his labour.

RIP Syd

rumour has it Pink Floyd have always made sure Syd was taken care of financially.

sad ...but that's the rock n roll life. Some come out alive ...some die young ...and some go crazy.

"Shine on you crazy diamond" was all about Syd ...thought I might mention that for those who don't know

I'm not afraid of dying, any time will do I don't mind.
Why should I be afraid of dying, there's no reson for it, you have to go sometime.

Then you got to love his song "Bike" from Pink Floyd's debut album "The Piper At Tthe Gates Of Dawn", Syd truly had his own way with a lyric:

=======================================================
I've got a bike. You can ride it if you like.
It's got a basket, a bell that rings and
Things to make it look good.
I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it.

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world.
I'll give you anything, ev'rything if you want things.

I've got a cloak. It's a bit of a joke.
There's a tear up the front. It's red and black.
I've had it for months.
If you think it could look good, then I guess it should.

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world.
I'll give you anything, ev'rything if you want things.

I know a mouse, and he hasn't got a house.
I don't know why. I call him Gerald.
He's getting rather old, but he's a good mouse.

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world.
I'll give you anything, ev'rything if you want things.

I've got a clan of gingerbread men.
Here a man, there a man, lots of gingerbread men.
Take a couple if you wish. They're on the dish.

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world.
I'll give you anything, ev'rything if you want things.

I know a room of musical tunes.
Some rhyme, some ching. Most of them are clockwork.
Let's go into the other room and make them work.
=========================================================

I remember seeing Pink Floyd live in 1994 and they led off the concert with Syd's "Astronomy Domine", playing that blast from the past was totally left field , it blew me away.

Sad news indeed. As Roger Waters once said, "Pink Floyd would not have happened without him, but (sadly) it could have not gone on with him either".

A very tragic figure indeed.

The part I always liked is that (unlike e.g. the Stones) PF never "moved on" from losing Syd - he was always present in their later songs, and the theme of his insanity was never a topic to be avoided in their lyrics. It's like he was still part of the band, and everyone acknowledged it, critics and fans too. They went way beyond Syd's influences instrumentally though, IMHO.
