Be like me when someone tells me to use the self checkout I tell them I say no thanks and I have actually left my cart there full of stuff. When I’m not in a hurry I will get another cart and refill it again.

I rarely buy more than a handful of things whether in Shopper's Drug Mart or grocery store, and I prefer to use the self checkout. The self-checkout booths are usually empty or other people with few items quickly check themselves out. This cuts down on wait time being in line for a cashier.

But if I had a cart full of stuff, I'd check out via cashier, and hope other people continue to do so, since it's more efficient when you have lots of stuff.

I hate waiting in line and unless Im doing a big full shop I always use the self checkout I think its great. It will be the way of the future so we might as well get used to it.

You push the button that says you have your own bags then at the end it asks how many bags did you use. You press 0 and you have to wait for an attendant to come by to bypass that command. Walmart and Zehrs machines are the worst. Lowes and Home Depot have the easiest machines to use.

I use them all the time and rarely get bags and press zero with no issues and no call for attendant

If I got a discount for doing a cashier's job I might be tempted, but if I did, who would I complain to about the foot and a half of useless receipt paper poisoned by thermal-printer dye telling me about offers that aren't special, web-sites I can find on my own, and disclaimers about stuff they should do but I shouldn't expect it?

LOL i thought this was going to be a thread on suicide.... I don't mind the self checkout (grocery stores, not suicide lol)...keeps my mind busy and I can move at my own pace...

I was pissed off at a Lowes store a while back. There were no regular checkouts working and both self checkouts were not working properly. The one I tried to use had an item on the display, I assume from a previous customer. There was a cancel button which I pressed. A message came up that said an associate would come to reset the machine but no one showed up. There were lots of employees on duty in the customer service area but none were paying attention to customers, they were just chewing the fat amongst themselves. Finally a clerk showed up and opened a regular checkout.
I filled out the online survey they ask you to fill out on the bill. The question that asks if you felt like a valued customer on a scale of 1 to 10 I answered 1.

Personally. I like the self check out. I usually buy a large amount of things that I use often that are on special. So when I do pop in to the grocery store I buy only fresh items or perishable or the items that are on special. Most of the time I buy at non peak hours to avoid the line ups, but even when there are crowds the self check out is faster. I think there should even be a 8 items or less self check out line.

Many Walmarts only have the self check out open when the store first opens. It irks me to no end. I am a rare type and like to pay cash for small purchases. Rather hard to do at a self check out. I find going to an experience cashier to be quicker. If I have to self-checkout, I might as well stay home and order everything online.

It is strange that these chains would ask their cashiers to push self-checkout. Not only are they asking them to suggest an alternative to their jobs, but it's not even the easiest solution to push people that direction. Seems to me the simpler way to push people towards self-checkout is to gradually decrease the number of cashiers while continually increasing the number of self-checkouts. The lines will get longer for cashiers while the self-checkouts will be relatively free.

I have noticed the self-checkouts are getting busier, so people are adopting them.

Times change. When has resisting change ever worked? Hell, even self-checkouts may be irrelevant in a decade and be replaced with no-checkouts like Amazon Go. Both shoppers and cashiers need to adapt to changing times. Adaptability is an incredibly important trait to have in modern times. More so than ever before, as the world is changing faster than ever before.

I'll do whatever is more efficient under the circumstances. I remember being in the Eaton's Center and went to grab a bite at McDonald's in the food court. There was a huge line-up of people waiting to order from the cashier, yet the self-serve checkout machines were available. I ordered via the machine and got my order quickly while everyone else was still standing, waiting in line to place their order.

I don't understand wasting a half hour in line just to order when you can order immediately.

She tells them if it wasn't for the customers they wouldn't have a job. It's too bad the upper management of large companies don't realise if it wasn't for their customers and employees they wouldn't have a business.

Some cashiers can be so rude, I remember when tap first came out. I paid with tap and she didn't want to give me my receipt until I showed her my ID. Told her it wasn't going to happen. She told me I couldn't leave with the stuff. I was like ok, return everything and credit my card. She did it, was all pist big line by that time she was only one working. Once she was done I told her I changed my mind I want the stuff, she scanned everything, used the same credit card and used the pin.

I told her you don't trust me, and I don't trust people that don't trust me with my private information.

That was a fun day.....
