Seeking 8mm camcorder

I have used an older Sony 8mm camcorder for some family movies. The cam is 14 years old. It used 8mm video tapes - similar to the 8mm data cartridges for computer back up. The camera is now broken and I have no way to playback some of the home movies. I did not even try to repair the camcorder since I expect the cost will be above $150 and therefore not worth the repair.

Are there any stores in GTA that sell 8mm camcorders or video players for a reasonable price. I have tried ebay and have come up with a few but I personally do not trust ebay. I was burned once and it left a bad taste.

Why not get them transfered to DVD, and buy a newer type of camcorder.

I considered that but cost to transfer is $20 to $25 for two hours. I have approximately 30 two hour tapes therefore approx $600 to have someone transfer. And that includes no editing at all just straight transfer. I will do the transfer myself once I can locate a used 8mm camcorder or 8mm video player.

In your quest, remember that a Hi8 camcorder can record at a higher resolution, but will also play standard resolution 8mm tapes.
Just like an SVHS VCR will also play VHS tapes.

Thanks for the reminder. It will allow for a broader search for a device that will play 8mm tapes.

My Digital8 camcorder decided to go to electronics heaven so I picked up a newer Digital8 model on eBay. Digital8 will also play both Hi8 and normal 8mm as well, so don't forget to expand your search to include Digital8.

Thanks xarir - I was not aware Digital8 would also play 8mm tapes. That should help widen the search with newer equipment.

I have a couple Sony 8mm, s if your interested in a purchase, they just need a head cleaning ( as do I , but not from U) . PM me if your interested.

Not all digital 8 cams will play 8MM, I have a Sony digital 8 & I kick myself now that I didnt buy the next model up , it played 8mm as well, my Sony doesn't play 8mm, trust me.

Mine are the origional Sony Handy Cams, they take 8mm tapes.
