I don't know if this is conspiracy theory, but my friend a personal trainer in Venice Beach, California has been just begin working with both Scott Neidermayer and Teemu Selanne. He also works with other players throughout the summer and has quite a successful practice... anyways, both Teemu and Scott have been hitting the ice and involved in various activities associated with dryland hockey conditioning. Not with the Anaheim Ducks team, of course. Teemu is going to be dividing his training time in between California and Finland, as he is to fly back in mid October. Scott resides in Riverside, an upscale suburb of Orange County currently.
However, both said they might want to retire and haven't shown up for Anaheim's training camp, preseason, or regular season opening games in England.
Officially they haven't retired.
Now you know, going all the way in the playoffs definitely takes its toll and no doubt these guys feel a little burned out. My suggestion here is, that they are probably not burned out enough to hang 'em up for good.
It's looking more and more like this could be what's happening:

Are you buying it? I don't know for sure, but it seems damn convenient that both guys are beginning to train so hard right now.By about January 1 of 2008, Niedermayer and Selanne will be well rested and probably itching to get out of the house and back to work. So they start training in earnest for six weeks or so and before the deadline they rejoin the Ducks, and at a prorated discount.
At the end of the day Brian Burke doesn't have to spend up to the salary cap to keep his team together and his two studs have had six months off to get over their Stanley Cup hangover and make another run.
