Police discovered "a complete subculture" where men call themselves "hobbyists" and refer to the women they pay for sex as "providers," Sano said Wednesday, the last night of the undercover operation.
Geez, what kind of men would do that????
"They all know each other and have their own terminology," he said. There are even several online "review boards" where men rate their experiences and describe a woman's looks and the sex acts she's willing to perform, Sano said.
We have our own Terminology?????????
Craig Newmark, who founded craigslist in San Francisco in 1995, said he has heard that "prostitution is a significant problem" on the Web site and noted that craigslist has built a "top-notch" reputation for responding to complaints of illegal activity.
Ah yes, I'm sure he's right on top of things (no pun intended)
As for the local craigslist review board where men discuss the sexual exploits they paid for, Newmark said those who operate the site are improperly using the craigslist name and that legal action is being discussed by the Seattle-based law firm representing his site.
You hear that Fred???? You can run but you cant hide!!!

I can understand the cops cracking down on women who are being forced into the trade, with that exception the rest of it is a joke. You think Chief Wiggum and the rest of the Keystone cops could make more constructive use of their time and taxpayers money rather than harassing consenting adults and what they do in the privacy of their bedroom.

well

just remember prostitution is illegal in the USA for the exception of some parts of Nevada. This may be crazy to most in this hobby but it's still illegal in the eyes of the law in the USA. Don't be surprised that it wont happen here soon with weeding out the hobbiests and incalls.

I am pleased to be part of "a complete subculture" that has its own terminology, handshakes and signs. Kind of like being a freemason I guess.

"It is easy money ... but these women are being exploited and it's degrading," he said. "You should hear what some of these guys have asked our detectives to do — it's disgusting."
There are plenty of legal jobs that are degrading and physically dangerous. And they only pay $8/hr.

At least they spelled "hobbyist" right. The fact of the matter is that prostitution is illegal in the States, and I am not surprised that they ended setting up a sting through these means. Incalls have always been risky and that is a fact. The truth is no law will ever stop this from happening. It is the oldest profession, and there is a good reason why. Perhaps not in the States, but here in Canada they should just regulate it, and eventually tax it.

I don't know about that. At least they're somewhat consistent in the US. Our cops and politicians are two-faced and full of shit on this subject, and Canadians seem to like it that way. They'll have token busts, but I don't know if a large scale crackdown in the big cities would ever happen. It would take a huge effort and only drive the business further underground, and the cops know this even if they won't admit it publicly.
