Have seen some amazing answers to questions here terb, hope someone can answer this question. I cant seem to find the answer on the net.

I toured the countryside on a scooter while in Cuba and had a great time, except for one problem. When I drove for a few minutes on trails that were rough the engine would die. When I tried to restart the scooter, the engine would turn over, but not start. After about 30 minutes the engine would start again and run fine.

The back roads are quite rough, and I'm thinking that the gas is foaming up and causing some problem, but dont really know. Is this problem common, and is there a solution?

Possible dirt in the fuel bulb

If I remember my scooter mechanics righ, these units use a ball and cock style fuel delivery system. I once had a honda that would run fine until the bike got bumped around a bite. Turned out that there was dirt in the fuel bulb, that would clog the line. I later learned to drain the tank and had many miles of carefree riding.

Hope this helped.

you need a phillps screwdriver

remove the two screws that hold the bulb in place and dump it out.

Next time, use a bicycle. No problem with the engine, and much more environment friendly. Benefits: total acceptance by the natives, and better for your health.

KBEAR--The problem could be anything..from overheating, igition/wiring lose. Was the thing two stroke or four stroke engine. Could the fuel shut off be blocked or partially open? The kill switch could come lose from the rough roads? If it is really hot and the fuel lines have been tinkered with you can get vapour lock in the line.

The problem happened 4-5 times on two separate trips with two different scooters. The engine was warm, but the problem happened when I was pushing the scooter to get up a hill, or coasting down hill. The roads/trails where this happened were very rough, and would bounce/jar the scooter some, almost like going up or down stairs. The engine would not die right away, but maybe after 30 seconds to a couple of minutes. It was a predictable problem.

When I tried to start the scooter after it died, the engine would turn over no problem, but would not even sputter or try to start, electric start. After 20 – 30 minutes, the engine would just start up and run perfectly.

The scooter had a 2 stroke engine.

Old-fashioned motors w/ mechanical (not electric pump) fuel delivery systems also were sometimes subject to vapour-lock. When fuel stopped flowing for whatever reason, the heat from the engine could vapourize the fuel at rest in a nearby part of the system. The 'dry' bubble then couldn't be pumped along, or fire up the engine. Only answer was to wait for the engine to cool and the bubble to go away.
Or provide a short term supply; I used to use a turkey baster to top up my BMW 2002's dry carburetter.

Can't help with your dilemma but I also rented a scooter while in Cuba and had a great time. It was a blast-riding along the Varadero resort road and into town. Makes me want to get one when I got back.
