Scantily clad baristas give economic jolt to coffee shops

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. — Even as Starbucks shutters stores, some coffee shops in Southern California's Little Saigon are booming with a formula that seems to defy recession. They are serving up strong Vietnamese brew, delivered to tables by young women in bikinis, spandex, fishnet sarongs or lingerie, displaying bountiful skin and cleavage.

Lots and lots of cleavage.

"I think it's kind of like Starbucks meets Hooters," says Tina Nguyen, 19, a waitress at Café Lu, who was exposing a bare midriff between tight Lakers jersey and black micro-mini tube skirt.

Like all the six to eight servers on duty at any time, she was teetering on 6-inch platform, stiletto-heeled shoes of clear plastic. She paused to chat and laugh with customers as she delivered $5 servings of thick, sweet iced coffee and refilled bottomless glasses of weak iced tea.

Customers are overwhelmingly male and largely Vietnamese Americans, although men of all ethnicities find their way into Café Lu or one of its many nearby competitors. Ten large TVs line the walls, tuned to sports and cable news. Customers such as James La play Chinese checkers and talk with friends at 40 or more tables.

"It's kind of like a bikini bar, almost," says La, 36, a recent medical school graduate. "It's unique. I don't think other cultures have this."

Indeed, while risqué coffee shops have been tried elsewhere, and bars that display ample amounts of the female form are commonplace, the mixture of eye candy and coffee seems to have taken hold like nowhere else here in the nation's largest Vietnamese community.

Natalie Nguyen, 36, owner of Café Lu, says the concept has been popular for more than two decades in an area that became a magnet for Vietnamese refugees after the fall of Saigon in 1975.

In recent times, she says, more competitors have opened. She estimates there are 50 to 60 such places in this area of Orange County outside Los Angeles. Like her competitors, Nguyen's café doesn't serve alcohol or food.

For cheapest airfare, L.A. has several airports:

LAX
Burbank
Orange County/Santa Ana (John Wayne)
Long Beach

AC flies to LAX, ONT, SNA.

Hmmm ... Richard Branson's new US airline, Virgin America, flies from JFK to LAX or SNA.

Also JetBlue flies from Buffalo to Long Beach and LAX.

Doing it in the GTA

Now that friendz4evr has brought this to the forefront, I'd think that any member of the TERB community or his friends/family who is involved in the retail coffee/tea trade might want to consider this idea.

Competition is so rife in this industry that it seems to me that it'd be the next best marketing ploy to consider introducing. How else, if you're a small player, are you going to beat the likes of Starbucks, Tim Horton's and Timothy's. The young hotties would in this scenario get lots of gratuities which would help them pay their college/university tuition fees.

As one other TERBite correctly observed, the California Vietnamese cafe follows the Hooters business model, except there is no alcohol served.

What a great, safe and lucrative idea!

Montreal has Sexy Restaurants, where the girls are topless or nude as they serve the food. There are some informative threads on merb about it.

Sounds like an idea whose time has come... no pun intended. <lol>

I am surprised no one has tried it here in GTA yet. There are a couple good former cafe spots for lease on College nr Spadina that would be a great location for such a biz.

Anyone want to start one up... let me know... I'll be very happy to screen resumes and interview/hire all the staff etc. I'll even do it for free... free ice tea for life. :D

Reminds me of a flight I took on the old TWA Airlines several yrs ago.

Shortly after take off the stewardess comes around asking "Sir would you like any of our TWA coffee?"

"No thanks" I said.

"TWA OJ"? she asks.

"No thanks" again I say.

"Perhaps you would like some TWA T then"? she says. :D
