I have a SATA II drive with 3.0Mb/s data transfer capability. My motherboard does not support SATA II without a PCI adaptor card. My current PCI adaptor card supports 1.5Mb/s data transfer capability so it's my understanding that my hard drive only works at that lower rate.

My question is this: If I buy a 3.0Mb/s PCI adaptor card, will I be able to fully utilize the 3.0 speed on my hard drive or are there other factors that play a role (e.g., the motherboard)?

NO.

No hardrive on the market even comes close to saturating the bandwidth of SATA I let alone SATA II.

biggest factor is rotation speed. 10K for Raptors is the max for SATA, for SCSI Barricudas are 15K.

Come on, buy it even if it doesn't help. While you're at it, get a new mobo and a new pair of sli video cards. If you don't, the computer companies will go broke and you would feel bad.

Really, the prices are pretty close with IDE/SATA/SATAII. Might as well get the newer one. (read/write times on the newer HD's will be better - as long as the HD's capacity isn't too high)

Hold the mouse closer to the computer. This way we can see you motherboard and processor.

Ahhh, I get it. I wouldn't be getting the full use of the 3.0 Gb/s anyways so why bother (other than for future upgrade possibilities). Thanks all.
