LOOKING TO HOOK
I'm 19 years old and am considering escorting. Could you please tell me what the realistic dangers are? I think my friends blow some of them out of proportion. Also, do you know any women escorts who feel good about themselves and enjoy their work? I'm sure they exist but would like it confirmed if possible. HAVE A GOOD DAY
If your friends are escorts then it seems unlikely that they would provide false information about their jobs. If they are not escorts, then you must understand that the facts that the general population retain about sex work, while not entirely false, are almost always pessimistically biased. Really, you only see hookers in the news if they've been chopped up and thrown in a dumpster or they're being lauded for getting out of the trade -- cautionary tales. Imagine if we only ever saw children represented in the media after they'd been abducted or abused. We would all have a pretty bleak impression of childhood, wouldn't we?
I suggest you read the interviews Sally Tisdale conducted with sex workers in her excellent book Talk Dirty to Me if you want a positive perspective. Also, here are some tips, laundry-list style, from an escort in Montreal named Lady Lucy:
* It is safer to go to hotels because you're in public.
* Some agencies are dodgy. Find out about working conditions and what kind of clientele they have. Ask the other women and see what they are like, that should give you an idea of what the agency is like.
* If you practise safe sex, health risks are obviously reduced. A lot of clients will offer more money for sex without a condom; be firm and say no if you don't want to.
* Watch what you say on the phone: pay phones are viewed as public which puts you in danger of communicating in public for the purposes of selling sex; don't ever talk about a sexual service on the phone. If you hear a boss doing that, get the fuck out of there.
Lucy also recommends having a cell phone and using a pseudonym. You may also want to refer www.walnet.org, a Canadian prostitution resource site.
I think back to myself at 19 and I certainly would not have had the wherewithal to work in the sex trade, though I have met others who were mature enough at that age to be resolute and self-confident about their goals. Good luck.
