Sars

The CBC FAQ Fred posted is actually from the W.H.O. site, where you can find a lot of other information about SARS, including daily status reports, counts of cases, what is known and what is being done, etc.:

http://www.who.int/csr/sars/en/

While I think the risk to the hobby is pretty low right now I'd be worried that all it would take is one "super spreader" to visit several SP's, and suddenly it could spread to the whole community--it'd have a few days to spread before symptoms started to show.

Any idea how many "degrees of separation" there are between SPs via clients?

Fortunately most people with SARS are doing OK so far--it's killing 4-5% of those infected worldwide (which is quite a high number for an infectious disease). The trouble is that many of those who get it require a mechanical ventilator in order to survive it.

That's fine so long as the number of cases remains small. The fear in the medical community is that if SARS breaks out into the general public there wouldn't be enough mechanical ventilators to go around. It's putting a severe strain on the hospitals already.

(edited: added link deeper into WHO site. Sorry Goober, I didn't realize I could post to this thread or I would have.)

both the chinese and canadian government should be blamed for the sars outbreak in toronto. outside of china- toronto has the highest cases of sars and the numbers are escalating. canada does not screen its immigration and china disclosed vital information of a deadly disease. funny how the middleast and korea were not effected with sars.

Actually, China failed to disclose vital information. They knew about SARS back in November! Canada was unlucky but not to blame. If every person entering the country was screened and quarantined "just in case" we would never be able to get anyone past the border. China should have put out warnings much sooner.

On a related note, I doubt we'd know about it right away if North Korea was affected...look at how long it took China to fess-up!

SARS is OVER the moment Dubbya decides to look for weopons of mass destruction in some other godforsaken place in the middle east. He knows they are there, because his daddy passed on the receipts....

Good to be back!

It's wonderful to be back in your fair city. Business has kept me on the other side of the pond for quite some time.

I must say that I was appalled at the media coverage in Europe regarding the SARS outbreak in Toronto. In London, in Paris, in Frankfurt, and in Zurich, the media portrayed travel to Toronto as a certain way of contracting the disease. Traveling to Toronto was akin to traveling to the remotest jungles in Africa where Ebola is prevalent.

It looks like we don't have to go as far as Europe to witness half truths and innuendo in the media. The New York Times recently reported that there was a cover up perpetrated by the different levels of the Canadian Government to avoid being blacklisted once again.

The media is politically motivated, and it is unfortunate that Toronto has to suffer at the hands of inept reporters inciting hysteria amongst their subscribers.

Thank you to Toronto and its wonderful health care workers.
Thank you to Toronto for demonstrating to the world how to contain an outbreak.
Thank you to Toronto for keeping its head screwed on tight, while all around were losing theirs.
