It has been relatively a boring period for innovation in the cell phone market. Samsung introduced the S-5 last spring but apart from the higher spec's there wasn't any new 'wow' features brought to the table. As they target the Christmas market this could change as Samsung and Apple bring out their new products.

This week Samsung introduced the Galaxy Note Edge, the first device to use their new curved screen technology. The edge concept is a great idea and allows a whole new level of functionality to the device. The curved screen is touch sensitive and allows controls, menus , etc to be displayed and used without affecting the full screen main display. In idle mode, the edge screen can operate independently allowing it to provide streaming information, alarms, clock, etc information.

I would love to see this functionality in regular handsets. A video is provided below:

I agree, that is cool. Will be interesting to see if it catches on and developers embrace it.

My Note 3 is such a great phone, I'm really excited for this. I probably won't be able to afford one right away but it's definitely on my list- I'm such a sucker for gimmicks like that. Though I can see a good use for a discreet alarm clock like that would be.

One manufacturer's special model product - it might be a long wait. If it is adopted by a few products when the technology is readily available in the industry, maybe then it will catch some attention.

I think that's the challenge with throwing features at the wall to see what sticks - perhaps they've recruited a dozen or so apps developers to build in cool features - if so it could change the form factor.....

I also wonder how strong that edge is.... will take a licking....
