Me and about 10 million Galaxy S owners are not getting ICS. I didn't realize this because I haven't used the Galaxy S since late last year. This is crazy! The S is only 3 years old! I don't have an iPhone 3G but it's getting some features of IOS 6 and that phone predates the S.

Supposedly, I can get ICS on to the phone but I would have to hire an expert or jump through a bunch of instructions to see if it can be done.

That's Samsung & android things in general. Replace at least annually.
That applies to all phones, not just android or samsung.

It's not reasonable to expect samsung (or any manufacturer) to devote resources to upgrade a phone that's that old. I would speculate that the vast majority of them aren't even being used anymore.
And please don't compare this to older iphones getting "upgraded". ICS is a complete rebuild from the previous android. It's not even close to being the same thing as an old iphone getting "some features" from a software update.

If XDA can do it, why can't Samsung?

Oddly enough, the Nexus S which is the same hardware spec (AFAIK) as the Galaxy S. And it runs ICS. Pretty sure, JB too.

I'd rather have a phone working exactly the way I bought it with whatever updates were intended for it than have a phone that gets partial updates and slows down.
whoever keeps a 3 year old phone doesn't care or probably even know about new updates like ics

and as was pointed out it can be updated(fairly easily) if you want to take the time. no biggie

Don't feel bad, only a small minority of Android users have ICS....

That's a lousy excuse. This is a top of the line smartphone from three years ago. If Apple did the same thing, you'd be all over it. I'd like to use this phone again because it's great for calls even though the battery life stinks.

Edit: A really lousy excuse. The phone was out in June of 2010. ICS came out in Oct. of 2011. So, not even two years and it's "obsolete".

Hey, I know about ICS and JB. And it's been pointed out, if it was that easy then I want it from Samsung, not have to jump through hoops or hire someone who I can blame if they brick it.

Nice of you to plagiarize my quote. Back door 4 U. That's quite ignorant to do without clearly showing what you did as you still attribute it to me.

Let's meet in an alley & settle this. Lol
thanks for showing a sense of humour, something a few on here could do with. cheers!! :)

Samsung needs to make a profit, XDA doesn't.
The nexus S is a Nexus phone, so it runs stock android. Anything other than a Nexus phone requires custom modifications by the manufacturer. You already know this djk.

I'd be all over it if apple did it? Based on what? Just because you're one of the closed minded evangelists here don't assume that I am.
I don't like it when people brag that apple keeps all old iphone current with updates when depending on what phone you have it's barely any change. It's a bogus argument.
I think it apple were to abandon support for a phone that's a year or two out or production it would make good business sense.

Based on your past postings, that's what.

And, first, you thought, hey, if the phone is three years old then it's reasonable for Samsung not to support it. Now, it's down to a year? Gimme a break, fandroid.

It's not a can/can't issue but a not worth the $$$ issue. Samsung would also be liable for any failures of an update while the community mods are caveat emptor (or whatever the Latin equivalent for freeware user beware).

It also is the way the open source community works. Apple's mentality is one style for all which means no need for thinking but higher cost and lack of customization. The PC world (and more so the Linux/Firefox type) expects that people will want to modify things to make it better which means less centralized control but more freedom.

If you don't want to bother the easy instructions from the very active and competent android community, get an apple (though I don't know how much upgrades you can get for a 3 year old iPhone).

I'd also question why someone with a 3 year old phone would be worried about having the latest OS when their phone works effectively as is.
