All things being equal (lifestyle and activities), what percentage premium if any, would you add for living in NYC vs. Toronto?
Would one need to make 25% more in order to live in NYC?

I've visited NYC a couple of time on pleasure and business. Never tried to do a formal comparison, so I'm no expert, but in my experience:
Restaurant food in Manhattan is crazy expensive, Street food and diners are reasonable in Manhattan as well as NJ, the Bronx and Queens
Rent & housing is insane in Manhattan and high in the nice sections of the boroughs. There are less expensive places to live, but they can be pretty tough neighbourhoods
Clothing, books, electronics is cheaper in NYC and in some case much cheaper.
Grocery store food is a little cheaper with a much larger selection available.
Gas is cheaper
There is a TON of lifestyle activities available, especially within an hour drive of the city.
Wheather can be harsh, more harsh than Toronto.

Google is good for this kind on info:
This site says 28.67% more (excluding rent): http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-livin...nto&country2=United+States&city2=New+York,+NY
This site says 40% more: http://www.expatistan.com/cost-of-living/comparison/toronto/new-york-city

I've lived in NYC.
Rent is expensive if you stay in Manhattan.
Weather is better in NYC than T.O (snow does not linger in Manhattan too long).
Also, you have to pay a city tax if you reside in NYC.

I would say the 40% is right in US $. So if u make $100k in toronto, u need to make $140k US $ for equivalent lifestyle.

if you want to live manhattan lifestyle expect to pay 50-100% more then in toronto. but you get alot more bang for your buck and generally the pay in nyc is higher and relatively commensurate. ie if youre a lawyer making 200k in toronto youre making 350-400k in manhattan. but NYC is a huge place and you can live in the boroughs and be in the city in under 25 minutes via transit or car. youre also talking about the big apple and there really is alot more cool shit to do in new york then in toronto (but toronto is great)

The 'weather' in NYC is noticeably milder than Toronto. Your statement is incorrect.
I was referring to harsh as in severe weather. NYC and Long Island get battered by hurricanes. Toronto rarely gets equivalent nasty weather.

NYC also has:
1) Humidity. I found NYC more humid than Toronto. Combine the higher humidity with slighter higher summer temperatures, it can be pretty stifling.
2) Rain. NYC gets more rainy grey days than TO. Accuweather indicates 50% greater rainfall.

On the plus side, NYC gets less snow and the winter temperatures are milder.

I always wonder how lower wage workers like chambermaids, restaurant staff, etc. can manage to live in NYC (probably Queens, Bronx and parts of Brooklyn?)?

That is why the rich Wall Streeters send their families to the Hamptons for the Summer. (Also, easier to cheat on the wife when she and the kids are in the Hamptons.)
