I just acquired a new Memorex MP3 player. I have been able to load songs and play them but the only way I can “safely remove hardware” is to shout my computer down. If I right click on the mp3 player icon, eject in not an option. If I use the “safely remove hardware” icon, it does not disconnect the player. Any suggestions?

just remove it. i've been doing that for years never had anything untoward happen.
I used to do the same, it was no problem on Windows.
However there is a problem since using linux.
When I just remove, say an ext HDD, it will play OK in Windows but won't mount on linux unless you first click on that 'safely remove hardware' icon next to the clock in Windows. So I started using that feature to avoid any problems on that and other hardware used in Windows before launching linux.
