Several women detained by the Taliban in downtown Kabul on Wednesday remain in custody, sources said on Thursday.
Witnesses say the women were arrested on Wednesday in the upscale Shahr-e-Naw neighborhood, allegedly for being without a male guardian — a rule enforced by the Taliban’s Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.
The women, who were either shopping or dining at local restaurants, were wearing clothing that complied with the Taliban’s strict dress code, sources said.
Footage shared with Amu shows women in tears, expressing fear and confusion over their arrest.
According to the sources, the women were taken to the Taliban’s 10th police district and have not been released as of Thursday.
Taliban have not issued a public statement about the arrests.
Since their return to power in 2021, Taliban have reinstated and expanded restrictions on women, including requirements for full-body coverings, bans on travel without a male escort, and prohibitions on education and employment for many.
Rights groups and Afghan activists have raised alarms over the increase in arbitrary detentions of women, describing the trend as part of a broader campaign of intimidation and repression.
Videos showing the arrest scenes have circulated widely on social media, drawing outrage and renewed concern over the deteriorating conditions for women under Taliban rule.
