In the long run stocks. In the short to medium term anyone who knows the answer for sure is busy getting rich, not telling everyone about it.

If you don't know what stocks to buy just buy an index fund. You'll get a decent return, won't be better than average, won't be worse than average.

Most people who think they can pick stocks better than the market average can't, and if they are honest, lose by their trading fees. A few people beat the market, but generally those people are finance nerds who spend FAR more time than you want to spend investigating companies and digging through financial reports.

If you're asking this question on terb you're not one of those people...

Stocks in the long run will likely give better returns. If this is truly a long term investment - but stocks that have a DRIP - dividend reinvestment plan. Most companies that pay a dividend have them, its a great way to compound your money.

IMHO
30 yrs ago I started to invest.I have learned a lot since then.
If I was 25 today I would invest 10% on fun, spec.stocks
the other 90 % would be in
1) stocks that paid dividends
2) 80% of these would be stocks that have increased their dividends year after year.
3) the last 20% of dividend paying shares would be some that I think will
increase over time but are too new to have a history eg GLS-N

The thing with stocks is if the market goes up-or down, your stock that you picked MAY go with the market OR it may not. Its more likely to go up in value if the market goes higher but thats not a sure bet.

Go like Fuji said-Index Funds, most pay a dividend also. If the market goes up, so will the Index Fund, some areas are better than others. Even if a company in that Index Fund goes bankrupt, the fund will drop it and you will not lose all your money.

Index Funds are for people too busy to watch the market everyday. In the USA market the simi-holders have gone down alot-SMH, when the economy comes back, so will the SMH. But theres many many funds out there. Banking may be a good bet too-not so sure about energy Funds.

Why in an RRSP? Well if you have the RRSP room it's a no brainer... RRSP's aren't taxed until withdrawl, at which point you're likely in a much lower tax bracket. (Most people drop several tax brackets when they retire.)

If you are already using up all your RRSP contribution limit and cannot contribute any further then:

1) Good for you!
2) You're right keeping fixed in the RRSP is better

buy Gold ETF's as well as Gold Juniors.....

just a guess but this will probably be a banner year for Gold Junior exploration and mining stocks(this includes Silver/uranium etc.)

but I also think sitting on a lot of cash for most of this year is a pretty good idea as well...so do both.
