Rogers SIM card swap?

Between here and there.
A question for the cel phone gurus.

I have a RAZR V3 (from Rogers) that I no longer use. I've since got on the Crackberry wagon and transferred my SIM card over to the 'berry. My niece has an old Sony Ericsson (from Fido) that's a pay as you go. The question is; can she transfer her SIM card over to my old RAZR and use it? Since both phones are Rogers branded, can the SIM card from the Fido phone be installed in the Rogers phone without any upgrades/unlocking/plan change/etc? We tried the swap but a "Subsidy Password" was required when the SIM card from the Fido phone was installed in my old Rogers' RAZR. I have no idea what a "Subsidy Password" is.

What are we missing? Does the Rogers phone have to be unlocked first? What is needed to make this work? Worst case, my niece keeps on using her old Sony Ericsson phone.....

in my pants, where there's a party
When using a Fido SIM with a Rogers phone, it's always 50/50 it will work. Sadly, in your case it didn't. You'll need to get the phone unlocked before she can use it.

you need to unlock the phone first. shouldnt be too expensive. there are stores in pacific mall that will do it for $30- $50
There are many stores outside of pacific mall that will do unlocking. The store I use is in the west end near Islington/Dixon road. They charge about $30. PM me if you need the address.

Locking the phone is an old technique carriers used to prevent you from easily switching carriers. Since unlocking has become so common the swindling cell phone companies have doubled their max rate for cancelling a contract to $400.
