Just got an automated call from Rogers and normally these calls really piss me off but this one was actually useful.

Apparently Rogers will now automatically notify you onscreen when you're watching a standard definition TV channel and there's a HD version available. It sounded like it will automatically switch you over to the HD channel (assuming you're already an HD subscriber).

That's actually pretty useful for me because from time to time I'm watching something and wondering if it's on an HD channel but can't be bothered to cycle through the menu to try and find it.

For once Rogers is doing something right!

They charge a premium for HD channels. If you arent subscribed you can click over and ramp up your subscription. Why shouldnt they continually bombard you with sales pitches while you watch? Its more profitable than using valuable airtime to broadcast commercials.

But as I stated, this is about convenience for those who already subscribe.

Yes, it's convenience for you, but they're doing it to upsell the non-subscribers. They don't actually care about you - they already have your money. :(

Cool. I find it a pain to find something good on TV and then have to hunt through the HD channels to see if it is on in HD. Way to go Rogers.

I concur.

Some people aren't happy unless they are complaining about something.

And for those of us who just subscribed to HD a month ago, it is still difficult for me to know if HD is available, so Rogers will help me utilize a service I'm already paying for. This too is something they are not prone to doing. For once, a good job.
Since it's all being done by software controlled machines, one wonders why such a service-oriented company wouldn't offer the "Switch me to HD automatically, when available on another channel" option, instead of annoying every subscriber with a picture-obscuring notice.

It is done automatically. I tried it out yesterday during the 6pm news which i normally watch on CTV HD on channel 518. I tuned in to channel 8 to see if it would be braodcast in HD and it was.

Out being curious
FINALLY!

I was really getting tired of cycling through the HD channels to see if something that I was watchin was available in HD. They should promote whoever thought of this idea. If this is just a plan to entice non HD subrcribers to join I don't care HD subscribers get a much deserved bonus.
