Rogers Download Caps Coming

In case you haven't heard, starting March 17th, Rogers will be capping the amount of data you transfer at 60GB/month. That's 60GB total, not 60GB up and 60GB down. They'll work on a three strike system for those who violate this. If you go over the cap once in a 12 month period, you get a letter. Second time, they kill your service and you have to call them to get it reinstated. Third time, they cancel your service.

So much for the days of unlimited bandwith on Rogers. At least now they'll have a hard cap, as opposed to that frickin soft cap they had that not even their reps could properly explain.

It doesn't come from surfing... it comes from downloading movies and music mostly.

The cable modem you get from Rogers (or Bell) keeps track of your downloads and upload volumes. I heard that you can hack into the modem and look at this data, but I do not know how to do this.

p2p affect

This is going to have a horrible impact on p2p networks, I usually find that my fastest connection come from other rogers IP address, now everyone will be definily limiting the upload transfer on their p2p app, (bearshare, exeem etc..). I am sure am glad i already downloaded "one night in paris"

To reach 60 Gigs a month is not very hard at all if you D/L from p2p's like I do. When I'm connected to Emule, I upload almost 1.5 Gigs PER day (Yes I share!) D/Ling a single DVD movie is usually at least 3-4 Gigs, so that 60 Gig cap is not gonna cut it at all. I guess I'll have to check out other ISP's such as LOOK or Primus. Anyone out there under these carriers already? How would you rate them?

I suspect you're not the only one who will bail ship on Rogers.

If you want to know how much you transfer, grab a program called NetLimiter. Not only does it track how much you transfer (up and down), it will allow you to limit speeds on certain apps.

As for 60GB. remember that's up and down. So if you use P2P, BitTorrent, etc, you're going to get screwed over. Everything people grab off of you, it counts towards your cap.

I do a lot with BitTorrent (for TV shows) and P2P (SoulSeek). I try to keep a 2:1 ratio with BT, and don't limit my SoulSeek, so I could see myself hitting the 60GB cap without a problem. That and I have a buddy with a nice Streamload account who gets me DVDs like there's no tommorrow. *sigh*

Apparently Rogers is doing this for it's VoIP service that it will launch in the near future. It will use the same network, and could potentially be their cash cow, so they want to ensure they have the network available for that. I have friends that rave over VoIP and I'd consider going with Rogers for it, but if they cap my bandwith, they can kiss my current and future business goodbye

Very stupid. Sympatico tried doing this and it blew up in their face big-time. There was a counter that you could log into and it would tell you how much you've downloaded and uploaded. It was only to the nearest week, however, so you couldn't finetune your downloading and you'd often end up going over (which was costly). One month I had to pay an extra $60 due to going over their cap. As a result of all this, users fled in droves to Rogers and complaints poured in. Sympatico dropped it soon after. I was looking into alternative services when they dropped the caps; it was the only thing that kept me with Sympatico.

I suspect the real reason Rogers is doing this is they can't handle the volume that their users are generating. While I sympathize somewhat in that Rogers couldn't have expected the huge spikes in traffic due to P2P users, they can't exactly charge any more for their service since it's already getting pretty expensive. So they put caps into place. At least Rogers gives a heck of a lot more than Sympatico did; I think it was 20 GB per month with Sympatico. It might even have been 10, I can't remember.

yup, and if they lmit my acct I willbe asking for a refund, when I signed up there was no mention of a cap.

Yes but the data transfer from just regular surfing is miniscule compared to downloading and uploading movies and music.
At least thats the way I understand it

reminds me of the uproar in West Virginia a few years ago when legislation was introduced limiting each citizen to one gun purchase per day.

It's an american's right to purchase as many guns per day as he wants

It's a canadian's right to transfer as many gigabyte's of music, movies and porn per month, for free!

60 gig could be used up very quickly..... just doing web work for clients before i use to go over that.... I remember when Sympatico had caps at 10 gig up and 10 gig down and i use to go over by 40 or 50 gigs every month. An hour of UT was 1 Gig. A 600 Mb movie transfer for a client was often 2 to 3 gigs of bandwidth.
