I am currently on the Transcanada with Mr Cupid 4.0 - typing away on my blackberry as he drives. I woke up in Regina and am heading to Calgary for the night before arriving in Vancouver, my new home for the next coming months as I open up Cupids second office.
As a kid I traveled through Europe and most of the US with my family but never saw much of Canada. A few years ago I drove to Halifax and have done the trip to Montreal, Ottawa, London and even once flew up to Timmins to go moose hunting in my early twenties. This trip has been interesting to say the least, Mr. Cupid and I are a very new item and have been dating for only a few months - moving together to a different province for the summer is going to be an adventure to say the least, luckily he is a tradesman so his job is transferable.
One thing I have realized over the past five days is how badly other Canadians think of people from Toronto, last night we were being poked fun of by a guy named "Noodle" (what a great nick name). As I travel I am starting to fall in love with the eceltic mosiac of people I am meeting along the way. This is a gorgeous country and I am so happy to be able to see it and experience this first hand. I would recommend everyone at least once drive cross country and check out what Canada is like.
Anyhow, back to listening to Mr. Cupid sing Billy Ocean classics as I fight for control of the iPod.

When I was a teenager I bicycled from Victoria B.C., through the mountains, Alberta, some of the prairies and through some of North Ontario. In my 20's I drove/camped in Quebec and most of the Atlantic provinces. There is a lot of beautiful country to be discovered in Canada. (I never say I am from Toronto.)

When I was a teen I visited my aunt in semi-rural B.C. She said don't tell anyone you're from Toronto, and you'll get along well with people. If you say you're from Toronto, people will take an instant dislike to you...they might even deck you.

Well I was raised in rural Ontario even though I have lived most of my adult live in Toronto. I still don't really consider myself "from Toronto"

You should have said you wanted to drive across the country, I'm sure a few of us would have let you in on some of the better local restaurants etc along the way. Plus we could have stood along the hi way and made faces at you folks from the almighty center of the universe. :p

Years ago I shipped my motorcycle to St. Johns and drove from one side of the country to the other over 2 months. It is a trip I will never forget. It is literally inconceivable how big Canada is.

Ah, yes, the memories. Did the Vancouver - T.O. drive twice. Most memorable (and surreal) moment was meeting Tiger Williams at a greasy spoon in Brooks, AB one summer. He was still an active player at the time.

I Miss You Beautiful Lady!!!

Okay, good to hear things are going well both on the drive and with Mr. C. :)
I've done the drive a few times, mainly as a child, and it really is quite the drive. The best parts for me are Northern Ontario and going through the Rockies. I always marvel at the trees, wilderness and the fact that water really can be clean, clear blue and not have a strong sewage odour.

We made it to Lake Louise as Calgary had not one hotel room available so Mr. Cupid and I kept driving and almost hit a baby black bear!
Got to the Fairmont and were upgraded to an awesome room, will enjoy the view and go horseback riding tomorrow then off to Coal Harbour where our condo and all our Toronto furnishing are awaiting our arrival.
I think I am in love and sorry to say, it aint with Mr. C, it is with the rockies.
Back to the champagne and strawberries...

People who hate people from Toronto are totally uncool in my books, however, I forgive them fore they know not.

Odds are good that they've never even been here.

I was born and raised in Hamilton and was bred to despise all things Toronto. Then I moved here when I finished University because there was no work for me in the Hammer and a funny thing happened......

I started to like the place. I realized that I was wrong to hate a place for no reason whatsoever other than small minded thinking. The funny thing is that as you live here, you meet a lot of other people living here who felt the same way before they moved here and they too have have changed their outlook.

One of the things it took time for me to realize...

CUPID said:

...was that most of the things that I disliked about Canadians that I thought of as being "Canadian" traits, were in fact Torontoian traits, and that other Canadians hated these traits as well.

In reality it turns out I really like Canadians...from out west (who remind me of my own U.S. Midwestern values and sensibilities) and out east (who are just the most kind, warm and friendly people...everything that is thought to be "Canadian" by those outside of Canada).

It has helped me a lot to remind myself of this at times....

Mlam:

Your comments above probably reflect greatly the comments made in the dating scene in toronto thread that went on for pages.

It is this "attitude" that many torontonians have that give us a bad name.

I always found it funny how many people's attitudes change once they are out of the city!!

I picked up on this thread too late to tease Ms Cupid about the wonderful landscape and scenery on the TCH between The "peg and Calgary. The greatest geological formation on that stretch of road is a dip in the pavement lol....When I drove that stretch I bet I didn't need to move the steering wheel more than 1" over the span of an hour.....

All the traveling I do is the one thing I like the most about trucking, there's nothing like just hitting the road and seeing whats out there, and all the people you meet along the way. I see lots of Canadians in RV's that drive around the USA also.

Three years in a row I took the train from coast to coast, was a phenomenal trip.
As a younger woman, back in the day, I travelled extensively throughout Canada and have been fortunate to spend an extended period of time in each province and territory, Nunavit being my favourite due to it's less commercialised(for now) lifestyle.
Glad you're happy, happy you're in pursuit of your dreams and goals and am envious.
Single can suck sometimes.
