Iconic folk/pop singer Roger Whitaker has passed from stroke at 87.
Great deep singing voice he had many hits including:

Halfway Up The Mountain
Durham Town
The Last Farewell.

Damn that sucks
1st song I ever learned to sing in French was Durham town!
R.I.P
LOL, my grade 9 French teacher introduced me to RW, she played the record with the French version of Half WAy Up The Mountain, I immediately became a fan of his music.

I spent 2 weeks on an Island in Quebec learning french during the summer ..that Sept. French was introduced in the schools...Grade 6..teacher thought it'd be cool to listen to some French music so she put Durham town on.(he sang it in french)
It just happened that ..THAT was the song the resort we were at played over and over...so I learned it....
As she played it I sang along and the whole class..including the teacher were flabbergasted...LOL

No matter what kind of day I'd be having, when I heard him singing it would put me in a calm, relaxed mood. Just a year ago I bought a dvd of his performance in an Edmonton tv studio in 1976. It was a small audience and an intimate setting, just perfect. RIP Roger.

I always played The Last Farewell for her when I went on long business trips back in the day. Also, Leaving on a Jet Plane.

He was big in his time. A friend told me a story he told someone on tv. Apparently he was in a restaurant or a bar somewhere and some random stranger took a dislike to him and started on him. A string of verbal abuse with the escalation of physical threats. When Roger Whittaker tried to talk the guy down or someone else did, and told the offender who he was, the guy burst into tears and left. I guess he was a fan. RIP.

I always remember him from the commercials for his "greatest hits" back in the 70s / 80s. I thought he was old then, which is why I filed this thread under the "shit... I thought he was already dead" category.
RIP... great voice.
