Brigitte Bardot, the French actor, style icon, and animal activist who fixated the world with her insouciant, smoky-eyed sensuality, has died aged 91.

The news was shared by the French news agency AFP, along with a statement from the Brigitte Bardot Foundation. “The Brigitte Bardot Foundation announces with immense sadness the death of its founder and president, Madame Brigitte Bardot, a world-renowned actress and singer, who chose to abandon her prestigious career to dedicate her life and energy to animal welfare and her foundation,” it read.

Brigitte Bardot was part of the Greenpeace protest of the commercial Atlantic seal hunt in Canada back in the 1970's. Greenpeace actually issued a formal apology to Newfoundland and to the Inuit for their cultural insensitivity and lack of understanding. Indigenous people have relied on the seal hunt for centuries for food and clothing. The commercial seal hunt was a large industry as well because of the variety of products you could make with seal skin and oil. From water resistant clothing to furniture to vitamin supplements. The hunt was also done to protect the cod stock which was another industry all unto itself. You gotta love the Newfoundlanders sense of humor. They organized a counter protest to Greenpeace and they called it Codpeace. They also furnished Ms. Bardot with a nice warm and waterproof outfit for which she was grateful when protesting in the elements. When they told her she was wearing seal skin boots she was mortified.
It worked she never came back to protest again.
Bardot was a controversial figure but she was consistent in her support for the welfare of animals. She was also highly critical of the Muslim population in France which she openly stated was hurting France culturally. She was sued for her beliefs several times. But she loved her country and always maintained residence there until her death. Maybe controversial but was such an interesting person. And in her heyday an absolute stunner. RIP.

She was very sensual and looked good even in her eighties. They made songs about her. She was famous for the movie: God created woman by Roger Vadim.

To set the scene, it’s the 1970s, I’m a horny, virgin teenager at home alone. I turn on the TV to see if there’s anything interesting on, and I stumble upon some sort of western movie in which Brigette Bardot and Claudia Cardina are dressed in cleavage-revealing clothing and they get into a crazy dress-ripping cat-fight. It was exactly what every red-blooded, heterosexual, teenaged male dreamed of finding on television in the ‘70s! The problem was, in those days, I couldn’t rewind it to watch it again. I saw it the one time. I hadn’t attempted in the intervening years to find that movie again, so I only just saw that scene for the second time today. A big thank you to Insidious Von for posting it above (in post 3). It’s maybe not as exciting in 2025 as it seemed in the ‘70s, but I still greatly enjoyed watching it again.
